Last night I was simply getting out a lounge chair, and I heard a loud pop come from my left knee. My wife was on the opposite side of the room and heard it with the TV on to give you an idea of how loud it was. Now I didn't have any discomfort in my knee last night, but when I got up this morning it hurt like hell. It's been hurting all day, but when I stay on my feet moving around it's not too bad. But whenever I sit down for a period of time or stand still it stiffens up and hurts a lot worse, work today was not a pleasant experience as the day went on. Now I am obviously concerned about this and have a doctors appointment scheduled for tomorrow, but I am curious if anyone on here can give me a clue as to the severity of what might be wrong with it. I'm fairly physically fit, and I don't know how getting out of a chair could cause a knee injury.

Impossible to say without seeing it, but a fair guess might be some type of ligament damage. If that were the case treatment could range from light duty for a few days, pain relievers and anti-inflammatories... all the way up to surgery. If there is swelling with it, I would ice it and take an nsaid like Motrin or Ibuprofen.

So... "RICE" would be the probable recommendation by your doctor (in addition to anti-inflammatory drugs.... but they'd likely tell you to take over-the-counter Ibuprofen, and tylenol for the pain (they are different) RICE, being: Rest Ice Compression Elevation |

I'll throw.... cartilage damage out there. When I screwed up my knee 6 years ago, I just kept working on it and limping around until it got to the point I couldn't put any pressure on it anymore. My knee felt tight and full of pressure and the more I walked, the more swollen it got. Every time I tried to crack/pop it manually to relieve the pressure, while it felt better, It put me in a lot of pain. Ice/staying off it/ibuprofen is the best you'll do until a doctor X-Rays it or orders a MRI

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. I went to the doctor yesterday and she ordered an X-ray, but I haven't heard back from her yet so the results must not be in yet. They did say expect to hear Friday evening or Monday morning, she tends to think it's a bad sprain or perhaps a small tear in the cartilage.

Pain is very minimal now, and the X-ray looked good. In all likeliness it is just a sprained ligament or tendon. I've been wearing a knee brace while has really helped take the pressure off of it and allow some time for healing. I feel like I dodged a bullet here, I really thought I might have had a surgery requiring injury.

![]() I dislocated my knee and it sucked. I had a muscle tear and stretched some tendons and slightly damaged a ligament. My doctor decided immobilization was better than surgery. Five weeks of immobilization. Guess what happens when they take X-rays after that long with your leg straight as a board? It takes two interns a nurse and a doctor to "help" you bend your knee the first time. I put a string of four-letter words together that was legendary. The nurse(male) was a Navy corpsman and he complemented me on it afterwards. ![]() |
