Default Proper care and treatment of PC speakers

For a very long time now I have been in the habit of having my PC's speakers off unless I was actually listening to something (a game, a YouTube video, etc...), which started when I had speakers that crackled whenever they were on. Does this have any sort of effect on the speakers, good or bad, or is it just a personal quirk.
