Default 80 GB ps3

Does anyone know when the 80 GB ps3 is supposed to come out? I hear the fall time. As far as I know, the 80 GB ps3 comes with motorstorm and 20 extra gigs of hard drive space for $600.00. I believe that the 20 is long gone and the 60 will be gone as well, maybe by the end of the year.

Just get the 60 and upgrade the HD yourself for less. You can get a 160GB drive for around $100 if you look in the right places (www.tigerdirect.com, www.newegg.com).
I plan to do this soon since my 60GB is already over half full and the really good stuff isn't even out yet!

Just keep in mind that the 80GB PS3 uses software emulation to run any PS/PS2 games instead of hardware emulation like previous generations of the PS3. Not sure what (if any) performance impact there is from this.

The 80 is available on amazon at this time, like you said. I think that the 80 is a waste of money because as many of us already know, you can buy the 60, buy motor storm, buy an 80 GB hard drive and make the switch yourself, for a lot less then $600, but we don't make the rules, sony does. If the 80 was a newer model for the ps3, I might consider it, but as far as I know, I'll pass. I've already played motorstorm and I don't need an 80 GB hard drive as my 60 isn't full yet. On my 60, I have 44 out of 55. 5 gigs for the system software and around 11 gigs for updates.

One other thing the 80GB version gets you is the 65nm (smaller die) Cell chip, which will probably run cooler than the 80nm(?) part in the 60GB machines.

If the performace isn't good, then sony will need to offer firmware updates on their website. I suppose the two questions, you need to ask yourself, is "How many ps1 and ps2 games, does the console run 100% right out of the box?" and "If firmware updates are required, then once you have the latest firmware update, where do you stand?"

That's probably true, but I'll still pass on the newer model.

Gamestop has new 20gb PS3s for sale for $449, 60gb for $499, and 80gb for $599. Can't go wrong with any of them.

Good point, I am hoping that the difference is minimal with new firmware versions. Hopefully 2.0 will be out in another month or so...

Has it been confirmed that the 80gb model has the smaller 65nm cell?

Cool The impact is imperfect or incomplete ability to play PS2 games

MOST games work, but not all. There is a list of the games available online (sorry I don't have the link) that the emulator will handle. If you have a large library of PS2 games and you want to continue to play them I suggest you find one of the 60GB PS3's. If this isn't an issue then do what you want. Ether way, enjoy your PS3.

According to the official Sony PS3 blog they are working on 1.93 right now to address some issues that 1.92 caused. All of a sudden my blu-ray playback is locking up and I'm not a happy camper. 2.0 is going to be a MAJOR release, most likely it will be the one that releases with "HOME" and I would imagine they are sweating every detail as they can't afford to have a glitch when they release it.

I think Sony typically releases their firmware updates once a month, so probably 1.93 will come the last week of this month... at least that has been the pattern so far.
