I think 3d will be the last major technology advancement when it comes to movies on discs for a long time to come. 3d is slowly becoming mainstream and it seems like every major film now is going to be 3d. Slowly the world will convert as I eventually will to 3d tv's. Then all popular movies will be converted to 3d and re-sold like Inception is going to be.
This brings me to my problem. I wanna keep collecting Steelbooks but with the slow change to 3d taking place I will have to re-buy all these movies once again. This will be the second time purchasing Batman,Heat,Kill Bill and so on. Some will be able to afford this but for me its a real issue im struggling with now. Keep collecting or just wait for 3d conversions in the future. Pretty much only popular movies are gonna get the steelbook treatment so you know these will be the same movies that will get the 3d treatment in the future then youll want the 3d version. I have reached a crossroads lol im stressing out!! |

The way I look at it most of the conversions look terrible compared to 3d native material so there is no need to worry about triple or quad dipping for years. Now when the tech for the conversions get better and the people doing them has a better grasp on it than i'd be interested until then give me the best possible versions regardless of the dimension.?

Whether or not 3d is here to stay in all media, steelbooks retain value really well, so you should be ok I imagine.
And if Green Hornet and Resident Evil (and Tron too right?) are an indicator of the future you will be able to get the 3d version in a steelbook if you shop globally, so hopefully the next big waves of 3d blu's (the new 3d Marvel and Disney movies, Green Lantern, etc) will follow suit and you won't have to worry about dipping again. as for studios converting older titles, I think it will be interesting to see when they decide to start distributing those and whether there is much fanfare for them when they do (retailer exclusives, special packaging, etc). I will probably plan on replacing the discs inside my steelbook cases (the very very few I own) with the 3d blu and selling the flat version in an amaray with printed art. Printed art doesn't seem to deter some people from buying (sold off plenty of HD DVD's with printed art after doing red2blu). I don't care if it's here to stay or not, there are going to be a few years of movies that I'm really excited about that are going to be made with 3d (depth or popout) in mind and I'll want to enjoy them that way in the future. If it stays a niche thing for video games and half a decade worth of movies- I'm happy I'm set up to enjoy those they way they were intended to be enjoyed. Converting movies against director's expressed desires is whole other thing, but I'll make those calls when they come up. __________________________ ed: hmm. I can't find them but I could have sworn I saw a european release of the 4th resident evil movie in 3d. And I saw Green Hornet and Tron and assumed there would be 3d's in there too. you might have a dilemma after all ![]() Last edited by seregloth; 02-28-2011 at 09:43 PM. |

If u saw it at home on a properly calibrated set, then I think u would understand it a bit more, and would realize that it's not going to die anytime soon. Now if u are going to start complaining about the glasses next, don't, because I also used to be one of the people complaining about having to wear 3d glasses too, but now that I own a 3dtv, I know that I was complaining about nothing, as the glasses are very comfortable light weight, and fit over prescription glasses with no problems. 3d is something you're going to use a few times a week, it's not like you're going to watch every show in 3d, so putting the glasses on every so often is not really a big deal, unless you're so vein where u carry a mirror in your pocket. The only time most people should have a problem with the glasses, is if they have young kids and are worried they might break them. Quote:
Though things do pop out of the screen and seem like they are right in front of u from time to time, like in the scene from Avatar where Nari see's Jake for the 1st time running around in the jungle and goes to shoot him with an arrow, the branches of the tree's and her arrow pop out as if u are right there in the jungle with them. Once a friend of yours buys a 3dtv then go to his/her's place and watch a 3d blu-ray which was filmed in 3d not converted, only then can u make your mind up on whether u like 3d at home or not, because u really can't form an opinion if all you're going off is what u have seen in stores. If u still don't like 3d at home after that then that's fair enough, but u shouldn't be making comments about something that u really don't know much about until u have experienced it properly! Well, if you look at DVD steelbooks as a guide, interest seemed to die off heavily once the bluray was introduced. But I don't see the point of collecting steelbooks just for their value anyway...

3D is the future..I LOVE IT... as much as I love steelbook, I'll take a 3D over 2D anytime... I hope 3D comes more in steelbook so I get the best of two world.
Remember the early days when those who thought blu-ray is a dying technology? Well.....we know what happen there...3D TV..3D receiver..3D movies... It's only the beginning... |

As to 3d being the future, I kind of disagree with that too. I think 3d is like a hybrid car, it's just the halfway marker from one full generation to another. It's necessary and I think it's fun, but I do believe that full on virtual reality entertainment is more like the future. 3D is just a hint of something a way on down the horizon. Manyak- I think your prices are a little out of wack. 3d tv's seems to be a 10-20% premium on comparable non-3d tv's. and of the admittedly small current catalogue of 3d titles available, you can get several for $20 at retail, and I expect that all of the 15 3d blu's disney is putting out this year will feature a $10 off coupon- in many of those cases that coupon will SAY it's only good for the bigger editions with 3d. I got Christmas Carol and AiW for well below $20 at release. Also this is the steelbook forum. Very few people here are dreadfully daunted by paying $30 for something, if it's the one that they want to own. Last edited by seregloth; 03-01-2011 at 04:34 AM. |

If u think 3d we have now is the same as 3d from 10-30 years ago then you're just being ignorant!

3D is probably not going to be a replacement for 2D blurays that blurays were for DVDs though. Not every movie has to be in 3D, nor could they all afford it. |
