I was expecting something along the lines of The Wandering Earth in quality, but was pleasantly surprised. I'd describe it as Guardians of the Galaxy meets Elysium with a dash of The Fifth Element thrown in. I think it will develop a cult following.

I was looking forward to watching this with a lot of skepticism... and I found myself regrettably correct.
It was pretty awful to watch. BUT, at least it was not as terrible as Wondering Earth, and only a tenth as ridiculous. No matter how terrible situation becomes on Earth, it will always be easier to stay here and improve it than to leave it. I gave it 2 stars, because it is one orbit above Wondering Earth... Just saw this. The clearest influences are Besson’s “The Fifth Element” (wild space opera, whimsicial tone, destitute hero, bureaucratic space government), “Valerian” (ditto + orbiting spherical metropolis of scavengers), “Waterworld” (hunt for innocent child figure with powerful secret), Elysium (class divide - poor Earth, rich sky city), “City of Lost Children” (Jeunet’s leering fast-cuts, and the search for a beloved child), and anime generally (frenetic action that’s near impossible to follow properly, and far-fetched stunts).
Things happen too fast - so much of it is a joy to behold, I really wish the action was paced slower to give it more weight. But the mind-boggling detail of the world, is admirable. You just wish the camera would linger long enough to let you soak it in. Soundtrack is forgettable, acting is serviceable to good, and there are some laughs. Effects are outstanding (as usual these days - but for a “where did this come from?” Korean production, I was pleasantly surprised). A really admirable effort overall. 6.5/10 |

Do you think this might get a Blu-ray release or no? I'm not holding my breath, but still.
