United Kingdom Star Trek Beams Back to Blu.......

from trekweb.com

According to 8of5's Guide to the Trek Collective, May will see the release of a new complete TOS Bluray or DVD Box Set in the UK, featuring a single case with three fold-out holders, one for each series. No news about a US release so far.

The US meanwhile gets the "franchise collection", DVD or Blu-Ray Box Sets coming in March. The first, includes The Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home and the second features The Undiscovered Country and First Contact.

now if Paramount would only get to the Director's Cut's of I & II, include a nice remastered in high-def release of TOS: Animated Series and season sets of Next Generation then these re-releases would not be needed.

Bought all three TOS sets and the Motion Picture Collection as soon as they were released, so no new sale from me. But that's pretty sharp artwork! I like "The Full Journey" tagline too, tho' if you consider the motion pictures, I guess it's false advertising.

Very True. I like the artwork they are using for this release as well. I'm pretty sure this will be the exact same discs from before so nothing worth a double-dip.

Instead of doing these straight re-releases, they should be getting the extended cuts of TMP, WOK, and TUC on BLU.

I'd be mighty pleased if this TOS release knocked the per season price of the existing releases down to the $30-40 range.

Now remember, this is a Paramount Star Trek packaging, meaning it will probably break once you open it

Agreed. I don't see the need to repackage the season sets... I think they would make more money on new releases of the movies in the director/extended cuts.

I wanted both editions of the movies that had them initially... so I am happy with what I bought. Now I want the extended editions to add.

Considering this will probably be way cheaper than buying the 3 seasons in US I will probably import these.

Paramount SUCKS.

Still, they continue to deny fans the opportunity to purchase these Star Trek films indivually, at more affordable prices. I half expected to see Paramount release all 10 films, in separate packaging releases ... as they should have been in the first place. Still, I continue to boycott any Star Trek release until they release the films as they were intended to be released.

Currently, the only way you can purchase every Star Trek film on Blu-ray is buy plopping down $100+ on the boxed sets. I don't know too many people who can afford that in one shot and most of us whould prefer to purchase only certain films in the series.

Star Trek III, Star Trek V, Star Trek Generations, Star Trek Insurrection, Star Trek Nemesis remain unlreased for the majority of fans who just want those films or just one or two of them.

Angry What's With The PQ on Original Films?

I bought the blu ray box of all of the original Star Trek films, started watching TMP and was appalled that the picture quality was terrible. The background of several scenes was totally blurry in one spot and clear in another. Has anyone else seen this? Is this a result of DNR? I can understand the entire background not being in focus when the camera is focused on someone or something in the foreground, but for just one portion of the screen?? I returned the box set and will sit and wait for remasters. Could not watch it.

TMP has some shallow depth of field shots. (Depth of field = the selected area where the image is in focus front to back) And I think they might even have used some split focus filters in a couple of shots (split focus filter: A filter than lets you focus on something near, on one side of the screen (for example a character that's close to the camera), and far on the other side of the screen (other characters in the background). But in the middle where the filter splits there will be a disjointed part that's out of focus. (I think the way the bridge set was built required a different lighting scheme and use of shallow depth of field lens apertures)

Is this set region-free? If not, then this topic should not have been posted in the "North America" category.

That's a pretty cool set. I assume this set contains basically the same discs that the individual releases do that have both the original versions and the enhanced visual effects versions, right?

Could be a diopter lens. I'd have to know the shot you're talking about.

I loved the color saturation in the ST:TMP blu-ray. Colors just pop off the screen.

This is why I would like to see them restored. The blurry issue seems to be throughout the films so I would guess it has something to do with the process imployed. Look at Trek 2, said to have the most work due to print damage. Look at the scene near the end where Kirk's son comes to his quarters to see him. Notice the table in the bottom of the frame. WOW! Look at Trek 5. The scene in the begining where Uhura brings Scotty food on the bridge. Notice the entire bottom of the frame. It has a burred line going through it. There are many more examples. I don't think it's true but it comes off as just being processed packed and shipped out with little care to quality. That said I would like to see time taken to get it right and re-released.

it's actually a specific camera technique that causes one part of the frame to be in focus and another to not be.
they actually use a special lens on the camera when filming.
in other words, it's not an issue with the transfer or the bd.
I actually love TMP bd because it represents what I saw in the theater in 79.
I don't care at all for the "director's cut" with the enhanced/altered effects shots.
the theatrical version is by far the best imo, and I am so happy that it is the one on blu-ray.

Where do the discs go in the set? Sliding between the cardboard?

I still need to pick up the OS, but will likely see if I can get the U.S. set cheaper.
