Kino has much respect for Burt Lancaster lately. I, in turn, have much respect for Kino.

Wow another Lancaster classic to cross off the list. This has to be the year of Lancaster? Lost track of how many of his films we've seen released or announced.

Yes!! He's an American master who's woefully underappreciated. This is one of his minor films, but still from the period when he was doing his best work.

I managed to find this on DVD ages ago at Amoeba where someone had broken up the Frankenheimer boxset. Looking forward to upgrading though.

Don't know how many but this year will from here on be known as "The Year Lancaster"!

I got it from Amazon on Tuesday, but have been working my way through the Criterion Macbeth BD this week, will probably watch this over the weekend and will post comments on it.

I just popped it in and had to stop it after about 5 minutes. After the first murder sequence (which has no dialogue), I got to the first real scene, and the dialogue had the now-infamous Kino Lorber audio sync issue.

I compared my BD of this film to my old DVD, and it does not have any audio sync issues.

My BD of On The Beach was fine, it had absolutely no problems, unlike other people. However my BD of this film was like watching an old Godzilla movie, as they reported.

I wonder if somehow only a portion of the BDs that are manufactured by Kino Lorber are out of sync. I don't know enough about the technical side of BD creation to say if that's possible. All I know is that I gave up on this disc after about three lines of dialogue from Burt Lancaster. I skipped to a couple of other scenes, and they looked just as bad.

I'll try exchanging it with Amazon, maybe I'll get a better disc the second time. If that doesn't work, I'll contact Kino Lorber, as I'm sure others have done.

Such a disappointment.

What do you mean now-infamous?
Do Kino's Blurays have this issue usually?

By the way, did you try other players?
I watch my Blurays on my PC.
I had an audio sync problem with Star Trek TOS when playing with powerDVD, but when i switched to CorelWin DVD, the problem was gone!

From the discussion thread on the monster kid forums:

Quote:
For what it's worth I received my review copy a day or two ago and I checked the Karloff segment.

The sound isn't just a little out of synch - it's a LOT out of synch. So much so that at times Karloff moves his lips and nothing comes out, then his voice is heard when his trap is shut. It's at least a half-second off, much more so than Kino's ON THE BEACH, which was a definite but mild annoyance. I could get through that, but the problems here render that segment completely unwatchable.

One other note: This is NOT a Blu-ray player compatibility issue; the discs themselves are out-of-synch. Kino also had synch issues on another MGM-licensed title, CAST A GIANT SHADOW, in addition to ON THE BEACH, though I haven't seen that one. Someone apparently representing Kino (apparently he administers their Facebook page) grumpily denied there was any problem at all, but DVD Savant, myself, Blu-ray.com's reviewer, and finally Robert Harris at HTF all spotted the same problem (with ON THE BEACH), and most of us tested it on multiple players. They went on record to say we didn't know what we were talking about and more or less demanded a retraction.

Clearly Kino has a huge QC problem. As I told Savant, I could ALMOST see how ON THE BEACH could have slipped past them. That title is only a few frames off (albeit for the entire movie), but BLACK SABBATH's synch issues are catastrophic; the entire segment is completely ruined by the technical glitch. Untrained eyes might not spot the problem with ON THE BEACH, but BLACK SABBATH's problems are obvious and ruinous to all. I'm fairly certain that's why the kibosh on the release for now.

The odd thing is that at least some of the people at Kino held firm to their position there was NO problem with ON THE BEACH, stopping just short of calling all of us reviewers complete idiots. As far as I know to date they still won't admit they were wrong.

Hopefully they've learned their lesson.

From dvd savant's review:

Quote:
On Black Sabbath starting at the beginning of Karloff's intro for "The Wurdulak" the audio sync slips. Karloff's voice is a little early, just enough to throw it off. The audio remains out of synch throughout the episode. For the record, my screener is a final product disc and I checked this on two separate Blu-ray players.

Lots of people complained that their ON THE BEACH discs had audio sync problems. Oddly mine did not. I believe there were also a couple of other titles that had issues, but I can't remember which ones.

I tried the YOUNG SAVAGES disc on my other player at home, but it's a Region B player and the disc is Region A locked. I brought it in to work and will check it out on two players here over lunch.

Thanks for posting this. I'm learning to not pre-order the Kino Classics and wait for feedback on each of them. I think they have to step up on the customer relations big time. My enthusiasm was high at first for these titles, but not anymore. They are just throwing these discs out into the marketplace with little regard, and at steep prices.

I just tried the disc on a second machine, at my office. The audio is still out of sync. They definitely need to fix this.

yeah, this situation just happened to me-- I wanted to buy Avalanche. Meteor, and The Great Train Robbery.

I waited to read a review of Robbery first since it was filmed with a gauzy-look and figured it could look awful on blu ray (as it did on dvd).
Avalanche and Meteor I pre-ordered.

Avalanche was fine but METEOR has mono sound even though it was listed as stereo!! Not a deal breaker for me, but I read that other people were upset.

Of course GT Robbery got great reviews and by the time they were posted the "sale" prices on Amazon were gone

Frustrating because if you want the good pricing you have to gamble and pre-order, otherwise wait for a review... and then wait again for a sale price

I think they need to slow down and not release so much at one time. Flooding the market should not be priority, quality should come first.

What listing are you referring to? The main profile on the site has DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. You can have Dual Mono as well.

DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0. (Mono)
DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (Mono)
DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (Stereo)

Etc...

I posted the following in the general KLSC thread...

I received my copy on Tuesday, but didn't have time to watch it until tonight.

I would say that in the first 15-20 minutes or so, there are instances in which the synch looks slightly off. It's most noticible in Lancaster's first scene in the police station. I saw no issues for about 98% of the film. What I did see was so slight, however, that I probably wouldn't have even noticed if I wasn't looking for it.

I would even consider the possibility that I was imagining it, except that I saw nothing even remotely like a synch issue with either Cast a Giant Shadow or On the Beach. (I can't speak for the Bava double-feature, as I don't have a copy.)

For the record, the player used is a Sony BDP-S550. I haven't tried any of the three discs in the BD-ROM drive in my laptop.

Is there a thread on this issue? I could not find one. Was this issue reported for the earlier Black Sabbath BD release?
