Default Apple & Blu-ray

I see Apple computers are a partner of sorts for Blu-Ray, but I have not heard much about them, in the Blu-Ray limelight, especially when we here so much about corrupt M$ and the money they are throwing about to try to keep this war going. Is there any chance an influence from them, can help Blu-Ray at all.

We were hoping they would release a BD drive on the new iMac but the price is too high for that machine.
It is likely we will see the first built-in BD drive on an apple when they update the tower.

I think we must wait until OSX 10.5 Leopard for Blu-ray support.

There are BD drives that you can buy for Apple. Considering a big chunk of the HD/video world is on Apple they will all be using Blu-ray. The next Mac Pro revision this year will come stock with one or at least an upgrade option.

IIRC, blu-ray drive are too expensive right now and there is no slimline 50 GB burner available at the moment.

I do hope somthing comes up with Apple soon for Blu-Ray, that would wipe the smile off M$ faces, and a bit of promotion from Apple for Blu-ray, as alot of people have took to apple in recent years, especially since the iPod revolution.

Although we are waiting for the new towers and new OS, I am still uncertain if Apple will announce anything this year.
I know that right now, Apple's Final Cut Pro supports both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

As others have said, right now Apple just seems to be waiting for OSX 10.5 in order to have movie playback support. FastMac, MCE, Logitech, and others have released BD drives for various Mac models, but they're mainly just usable for data at the moment.

Edit: To a poster above... the only two slimline (notebook) burners are both designed by Panasonic. They both can write to 50 GB BD-R/RE discs.

I though the burners are dropping in price, I believe it will be a while off yet to see burners below $100 mark, but are they not reasonable enough now.

But as in my original post, can wee see an influence of sorts from Apple to help Sony, Disney etc, to promote Blu-ray to the consumer, instead of being a silent partner.

Apple is more focused on the iPhone right now. High res A/V is not Apple's core business by any stretch. I hoped they would include Blu-ray drives on the iMac, but it was not to be.

Default What are they waiting for?

Three things will have to happen. First, they must get the $300 Pioneer Superdrive that plays BD and records to DVD. Second, they must have the new OS because it will likely include an upgraded "DVD" player app. Finally, I am sure HDCP is an issue, so video cards with HDCP out will have to become standard for BD movie playback. I am a die hard mac fan myself, and their silence is starting to piss me off. I better see it as an option when their next towers come out.

Apple needs to step up and from what I've been reading, they will in the near future.

I will not buy an new computer unless its equipped with a BD drive.

I may get an Apple, it would be my first one, I think i need a change.

I want to try Apple.

I'm guessing that you won't see anything from Apple with Blu-ray until OS 10.5 is released in October. I don't think it will happen then. The earliest I think you will see anything is during Macworld 08 (January 15-18, 2008) I also think the first product from Apple will be in a Mac Pro. They almost always put high end stuff in there tower first then they move down the product line. Mac Pro -> Mac Book Pro -> iMac -> Mac Book.

I'm not an insider, this is just what I think. I just have been using Apple product since 1987 when I got my first Apple IIe.

We have a PC on its last legs right now so this one is simple for me. If they add an option with a Blu-ray writing drive, I'll buy a new iMac. If I have to keep waiting, I'll spring for the Dell.

Whatever the case, I'll keep my hard earned dollars within the confines of the BDA before ever looking elsewhere.

Once you take a bite of an Apple, you are doomed.
