Default PS3 Doom and Gloom

By the end of E3 I had expected to be saying "That's it, I want a PS3, where can I preorder". But that expected enthusiasm hasn't yet appeared.

Every gaming website I've seen is critical of the PS3; it's too expensive, the 20gig version is pointless, the graphics are no better than the 360, the launch line up looks thin, etc.

But these same sites are gushing over the Nintendo Wii. Am I the only one who thinks that, clever though the controller is, it's a massive gimmick? I've played eyetoy and Buzz games, and fun though they are I still prefer a joypad for "real" gaming.

Or is the Microsoft modular approach a better one? Buy the console cheap and add bits as you want to?

On paper the PS3 does everything I want; as an owner of a Hi-Def tv the PS3 gives me HD gaming and movies. Plus connectivity with my PSP and plenty of other features. But with only 6 months till launch there are so many questions;

We've yet to see any reviews of how good a movie player it is. Does it do Blu-Ray justice?
It will upscale PS1 & 2 games, but does it upscale DVD's?
How good a DVD player is it?
How good do PS1 & 2 games look?
How do I transfer my saved games to the PS3?
What is the full functionality of the PSP with a PS3?
Does it justify the price?

I don't want an Xbox360. There's nothing available that I'm interested in, the HD-DVD add on is a cheap and tacky ploy to steal some thunder from Sony and may not even support all the features of the format. Live doesn't interest me much, I get on fine with the cheap and cheerful PS2 online service.

I've even less interest in the Wii, I just can't see myself standing in the middle of my lounge waving a stick around to catch virtual fish...

So, a PS3 it is. But why don't I feel as excited as I expected to? Maybe the coming months will reveal some really exciting news, but so far, Sony seem to be struggling to get the PS3 message across. I almost feel like I'm going to buy one because the other offerings hold no interest, you know - the others are no good, and all that's left is the Sony console, oh well.

How does everyone else here feel?

Ps3 all the way for me. The $600 version.

It's real simple: The BR thing is a nice bonus, but from a gaming standpoint...just keep rolling the exclusives that people can't get anywhere else, from RPG's on and, I don't see how they can go wrong.

But what if it is a poor BRD player? How will you feel if it doesn't do the blu-ray format justice? The movie playback ability is then reduced to a cheap add on, much the same as the xbox360 one.

Has anyone got a link or any info on the PS3's ability to play DVDs and BRD's?

Based on the specs, the ps3 will give you everything a stand alone blu-ray player will. If you want to do the blu-ray format justice, you will have to own a tv with 1080p inputs, and a sound system that includes a receiver that can accept multichannel pcm via hdmi and also supports 1080p video passthrough.

Im gonna get me the higher end ps3.

Sony doesnt seem like they are really marketing the ps3 yet, but i have read that they are about to undergo a huge marketing campain toward the end of the summer for there new 1080p tvs and ps3.

Hi, I just joined this forum, I am a gamer and I think Sony did the best at E3, they seem to be the only ones concentrating on real console gamers, Microsoft seems to be focusing on PC gamers and Nintendo seems to be focusing on kids.

I think the PS3 has a standard Blu-Ray drive but the 60gb with HDMI is good enough for me, if you want a better drive your gonna have to pay $1000 for one of the BD players.

also the game line up for the PS3 is amazing you can tell they're really concentrating on what PS2 gamers like.

here's a page with specs

I think it'll be a little bit better than that. I sure hope so, anyways.

Not much out there, really.

But as to your question. It's either roll on the PS3 vs. paying at least a grand for a first gen stand alone player that I'll almost certainly have to update for one reason or another in a fairly short amount of time?

I'll feel pretty good, because I view the PS3 as a stopgap and never had any designs or expecations past that.

Remember: As a gamer, I would be buying the PS3 anyways. The BR movie playback is gravy.

LOL, that's exactly how I feel about the Nintendo Wii. I found a lot of articles pumping up the Wii and how it gave people nostalgia. That's all great, but as far as gaming is concerned, does it deliver present day games that will be loved by all gamers, and not just the 8 year old and younger crowd.

I guess it will be a very basic BD player, just like the PS2 back then with DVD.
All of the basic features will be there for good movie playback.
I don't think Sony is going to deliver a crap machine with PS3, like I said, as with PS2; good enough for atching BD movies, but then after a while, you're gonna go for a stand alone player.

The PS3 also supports DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD,
but then, you already knew that I guess.

btw: I never (okay, sometimes) use my PS2 for watching DVD movies, but playback is still better than your average bargain DVD player, not bad for a over 6 year old drive.
Let's hope PS3 will offer the same & more.

I want 1080p 'native' games... not 720p games.

that is my main concern more than anything.

I'm not buying 1080p displays for the same' ol same'ol 720p...

All games should be optimized for 1920 x 1080p

Oh, and games should use Dolby Digital LOSSSLESS quality audio. Its a blu Ray feature so use it... Just like movies, games can use the legacy DD/DTS track or the lossless portion if you have a new audio processor to take advantage of DD/DTS lossless.

1080p games + high quality lossless 24/48 multichannel game audio...

F this lossy MP3 cheap ass generation...

Probably several years away from all of that.

I actually think the Wii will be great...

the controls for Madden peak my interest greatly..

something seems different about Nintendo lately...I found myself picking up my Neice's NDS and played the new Mario game...

Nintendo is really trying to get back into the swing of things and I think they could end up 2nd in this race....and on top of that.... my prediction is Microsoft will try to team with them on their next console to take Sony down...

I don't know how people in Japan would feel about this....due to the fact they dispise Microsoft...

but my gameplan is to buy 2 PS3's and sell them on ebay and have a Wii to hold me over with Madden...the only game I really play anyways....unless the PS3 version plays alot better....because the graphics are at a point where I could care less if they look better...

Wow, that's an interesting idea. One which doesn't seem crazy at all. I can definitely see Microsoft making an attempt at joining Nintendo for this sole purpose.

The Wii was apparently a big hit at E3.

I think you should actually try playing it before you judge it. I, for one, can't wait to see how this system war plays out!

And we like them?

lol...microsoft does about 3% over there....over here...they do more than that on the opening weekend...they completely ignore them over there...

and the sole reason I see the 2 forces joining together is exclusive titles...

even if Nintendo does aim more towards kids...

they'll have games you can only get for Nintendo..........besides Halo lol....much like Sony does with all of their top titles...

one thing Nintendo knows how to do is make games....

people are hating on the controller...others love the idea...

I hold out hope for a success for the controller because of 2 reasons...

1. Sony has already bit the idea

2. this isn't the 1st time Nintendo has changed the face of controllers.....think NES when we had only joysticks previously....then N64 where they added the analog stick and funky controllers which actually played well....now all systems have these features...

all Nintendo has to do is make games for kids.......and adults....they already have the appealing price and the knowledge in making games...something Microsoft knows nothing about..
