Hey guys,
I'm in the planning and drafting phase of my first house and number 1 priority is my Home Theatre. My home lender is fully aware of this so they are working closely with me to achieve a great outcome. What would be a good size? Due to being my first home and living on my own, size is restricted so the largest enclosed room space i can achieve so far is 5200 x 4100. Do you think this is adequate? Anyone got any photos of home Theatres close to this size? Thanks guys. |

I'm not sure what your dimensions are in, (mm I think) I came up with 13' x 17' that's definitely doable. I've seen them in rooms smaller than that. What kind of setup are you looking at?
There should be some pictures of some that size in the galleries. I'm not sure how many people call out the dimensions of their rooms though. Mine is currently in a room that has a slight "L" shape to it. Its 21-22' long, the first 10-11' its 12' wide and then it widens to 14' for the other 10-11'. My screen is on the narrow end of the room. I fit a 120" 2.35:1 screen in there, barely ![]() If I could build one from scratch or add on to my house I would like an interior dimension of 18' x 25' with a 9' ceiling. |

I'm pretty close to those dimensions, room is around 19x12, but my false wall puts it closer to 16 or 17x12. Picture in my gallery.
Anyway, that is plenty of room for a dedicated theatre, I think you would pleased with that. Do you know what projector you are looking at? As you are probably looking at 16 foot throw max, so depending on the projector you choose you may not be able to max out your width. |

Thanks for the replies guys
![]() My apologies regarding the measurement, i'm aussie and we use milimetres to measure. It comes out to 17x13. Basically i want as high end of system as possible. Will 7.1 be do-able in this size of room or should i stick to 5.1? Also, screen size... I'm going for a Projector. |

Mine is pretty close to that.. about 12' X 25'... but due to the layout of the room, my viewing screen has to be on the long wall. I WISH I could go the other way around, as managing audio in this layout is much more challenging I think.

![]() How are you planning on setting it up screen on the short wall or on the long wall? |

Screen will be on the long axis of the room.
This room is perfect, i've made a recess (cupboard) on the side wall which will hold the equipment aswell. |

With the screen on the long wall throw distance could become a problem as a 12 foot throw isn't too long, as far as 5.1 versus 7.1 in a room that size I'm not convinced you will get enough separation to really hear much of a difference between the two. That coupled with the fact that there is still so little 7.1 material being released I think you would be better served to take the money you'd spend on the extra 2 speakers and put it back into other components... That all being said... If you are still finishing the I'd probably wire for 7.1 and like others have said you can always add the speakers later.

will the screen itself be on the short wall with the long walls being the side walls? this is usually optimal for those dimensions. If the sides are the short and the screen is being placed on the long wall then it could be more of a challenge.

My apologies for the confusion, the screen will be placed on the short wall.

On a side note regarding room dimensions. There is only one major situation you want to avoid, standing sound waves, which will degrade the performance of your sound system. To avoid standing waves simply avoid building your theater in a square-shaped room, considering the height, as well. The guiding principle among home theater professionals is to structure the dimensions of your room in such a way that its width, length, and height measurements do not share a common denominator. For example, a room with the dimensions of 15W x 11L x 8H is preferable to a room 16W x 12L x 8H (all evenly divisible by 4). There are some amazing free calculators on line to figure out the best shaped room. Here is a very detailed one, which will show you your room modes and trouble spots: http://www.bobgolds.com/Mode/RoomModes.htm |

No sweat guys. I liked that calculator, as it gives the most detail to the problems you will face. But there are others. Before I built my room, I spent a bit of time with them, and I think it saved me alot of gray hairs. Still got a few from the process though.
