Default Just got the YLOD

Considering actually getting a new blu-ray player that isn't a PS3 to save some money, any suggestions? Options are -
Fix PS3(not sure how much Sony would want)
Buy new PS3
Buy a stand-alone

My second one got YLOD for the second time..... both got it, then both got it again after the warranties ran out.... I also went with non-ps3's (because I don't have any games) I want to say I heard it cost about $150-$175 to have it fixed, but I'm not sure.... either way, the two players I got (one was shipped today so I don't have it) are:

Sony BX57 (costco) and Samsung C6500

I chose those two because they both have built-in-wifi, Netflix and Pandora..... those were the options I wanted, and the two players that offered them at the lowest price.

The BX57 from Costco was $130 or so after tax, and then I took a chance on the Samsung as an "Amazon Warehouse" deal for $90.99 shipped..... so for the options I wanted, under $100 seemed like a steal.

I have owned 6 Blu-ray players so far..

4 PS3's

two died...YLOD
two still working..

one craptastic Samsung that won't play DVD's and my nice reliable Sony I bought to replace my dead PS3..

I'm really liking the Sony...built in Netflix, Pandora, Youtube etc..love it.

I want a Sony with built-in wi-fi but I've heard bad things about the S570 so really not sure I want that one.

It cost me $150 to send my PS3 to Sony, and they sent me back a refurbished unit. That sucked for me because I had a 320 gb hdd in my unit which had 30+ games/dlc and my entire CD collection on it (700+), which I had to re-format. That said, if you're only using your PS3 for BDs, then your headaches getting your deck fixed (refurbished) will be lessened (however, I'm sure you could get a decent stand-alone for $150 as well).

I have the S550, and, I really like it...I bought it on Black Friday for $89. I think it's awesome...glad I went that route instead of getting another PS3

Well I do play PS2 games from time to time but I have a brand new PS2 for that that only really needs a power brick. So yeah I think I'll just go with a stand-alone for now, just not sure which model. Will say I am sad I invested $400 in this thing in 2008 and it already broke but I guess it happens. Will miss the loading speed and the sleek design, that's for sure.

If you want Wifi, Netflix, and Pandora, then definitely consider the two I listed, as I spent quite a bit of time looking for "affordable" players that did those three things, and those were the two I came up with.

Good luck.... nothing worse than having it die on you..... my most recent one (a week ago maybe) hadn't been used in 24+ hours, and I was 10 minutes into an episode I was streaming from Netflix, and it turned itself off, and wouldn't turn back on after that.....

I don't use Netflix, I either watch shows on TV or on DVD/blu-ray, I screen movies on cable movie channels. I guess I'll look at players the next time I'm inside a local retailer, still sad I'm already doing this, was hoping the porker would last me into 2013. At least I got Moonraker out.

My first 60gb ps3 got the ylod within the 1st 4 months, Sony gave me a choice under warranty to either get it replaced with a refurb unit which had a 48 hour turn around time, or to wait up to 8 weeks for them to repair the one I owned. I decided on the refurb option only because I had people coming to stay the same week who I had been telling all this great stuff to about blu-ray, so I wanted to show them it when they arrived.

When they left, I put the refurb unit up for sale on ebay and actually got more than what I paid for it back. I met the guy who won it at a local kfc, he gave me the money and I gave him the console, as soon as he left I went straight across the road to my brothers work (my brother works for an electronics retailer) and bought another brand new 60gb ps3 but also purchased a 5 year extended warranty plan to go with it this time. I've never had a single problem with the 2nd 60gb model, which I've now owned for 3 and a half years, and was my main blu-ray player up until 4 months ago.

Its funny this post should come up. I just bought a second PS3 slim just as a backup in-case my FAT 60GB launch PS3 ever dies. But so far so good.

I would replace it with a PS3 SLIM, haven't really heard too many problems with those due to the heat dispersion issues being fixed. Plus, in terms of bang for your buck the PS3 is still the winner. Plus, they are getting cheaper everyday too.

If you want it to connect to a media server, some people have reported issues, but if you want it to connect to Pandora and other audio/video services, it works brilliantly. Especially at that price.

And it's being replaced by the S580, so if you're paying $200, buy the new model. But if you can get the S570 for around $150, I'd get that. Right now, probably because the S580 isn't in inventory yet, they're both going in most places for $200.

I have owned 6 BD players. Currently have 4: 2-SONY BD 570s, 1-PANASONIC DMP 85, and 1-PANASONIC DMP 65. All work great but my favorite is the SONY BD570 players. Without a doubt the best stand alone BD player on the market for the features it offers for the price. DONT BE AFFRAID AND BUY THE SONY 570. The PANASONIC PLAYERS I HAVE MENTIONED ARE FANTASTIC BUT COST MORE AND OFFER LESS FEATURES.

Don't want to spend $300 on a player right now, want to wait for the PS3 to drop to $200, hoping the next player I get will last me until that happens. Still quite angry about this, at least I have a few combo packs so I'm not complete out of luck movie-wise.

Sounds to me that you really like your PS3. If that's the case, you may as well send your broken one in for repair/refurbish (even w/ a price drop, a PS3 won't be sub $200 anytime soon, and it took less than 3 weeks to get mine back from Sony).

I don't think I want to wait 3 weeks though, you'll understand if my PS3 adoration has dropped considerably today. I don't want to spend $150 to get a fixed one when I can spend that same money and get a brand new player that I can have NOW, that will probably last longer.

Narrowed my choices down to the 380 and the 480, as far as I can tell the 480 is just a "3D upgrade", if so I'm going for the 380, I don't want 3D. Wow reading reviews for both and think I'll keep looking. :-s

My neighbor's PS3 also just got the YLOD and I think he's going to send it in for a refurb exchange.

My own 60GB got the YLOD after 2 years and 10 months but lucky for me I got an extended warranty when I bought it so I got it exchanged for no cost to me. My replacement 60GB is doing fine and I just played it for hours (Madden, Black Ops.)

I don't use it for Blu anymore though. I bought a Sony BDP-S370 for my HT and moved the PS3 out and I just use it for games now.

I got the S370 for $80 from BestBuy outlet on Ebay and it came looking and acting like new. It's similar to the 57 or 570 just without 3D or wifi which for now I wouldn't use anyways because I have my router setup right under my Blu Ray player.

Get the BD-C6500. It works flawlessly and haven't had a problem since purchasing it.
