![]() ![]() Bikini Girls on Ice Blu-ray Does anyone who ordered this have it yet? On Amazon it says it will ship in 9-12 days. Some other websites list the release date as 8/30/11, confusion has ensued. Is this movie really that popular of did the studio only press 5 blu rays? BGOI arrived this morning. Giving it a watch later. The covers a nice variant on the temp one we have on here. If a high res one can be found its worth changing it. For anyone interested I will make a note of region coding too as it has the A logo on the back but I thought Well Go USA were generally region free.

Here's my thoughts that I posted over at Empire Film Forums a while back,
Finally I've had the fortune to watch a film I've been waiting two years to see. It all started when I had tickets to the 2009 Gorezone film festival in London. I had tickets to the Saturday and could not attend the Sunday. Initially there were two films that immediately stood out for me. The Japanese splatter film Samurai Princess (which I was able to see) and as a massive slasher fan Bikini Girls on Ice looked to be the most anticipated film of the films listed for day 1. Devastatingly the festival schedule that had been released was not finalised and BGOI had been bumped to the Sunday. Left heart broken I made do with meeting Suzie Loraine and Emily Booth. Yeah I could have bought the DVD version that's been available in the UK for over a year. But this is me we are talking about. Yesterday BGOI arrived from the good people at Well Go USA on shiny Blu Ray. Essentially a group of hot collage girls are on a trip to a Bikini car wash when there bus breaks down at old abandoned petrol station. Unfortunately its not so abandoned. Fortunately after all this anticipation I can confirm I really enjoyed BGOI. It has a real structural appreciation for the Slasher genre which I find is all to often ignored. They try really hard to actually build some suspense. It doesn't always work but dammit they try. Plus it has Bikinis, I know this is juvenile but hell BIKINIS! The killer is nice and menacing but sadly is sans mask. The cinematography is obviously on a budget but they clearly tried very hard with it. However its nowhere near perfect. The acting and script are at times atrocious but they do nail it when it matters. Sadly the aforementioned script is responsible for some gaping plot holes that were head scratchingly bad. Also the editing and audio could have been tighter. But its obviously on a low budget so I can forgive a lot of that, even if there are a few times some simple ADR could have made things more convincing. The films pacing could have done with a cat and mouse kill as it seemed to drag near the middle. The thing that really knocks it from being a genre favourite is they break my cardinal rule. Don't skimp on the practical blood effects. The kills are all more or less the same and they don't have more than a tiny spatter of blood, there's not much creativity. All entertaining and violent enough but if it had the effects of a film like Hatchet then I guarantee more people would rave about it and it would be up there. The Blu Ray is a US disc but it is region free as it played fine on my PS3. The film its self is encoded in 1080i rather than full HD but then I imagine that's down to the low budget nature of the source. I suspect the film will never look better than this Blu Ray. It can be very noisy with grain at times but also looks quite nice at times. Certainly a step up from a standard DVD I'd have thought. It has a few special features also in HD, but they are nothing to shout about. Most interesting of which is the failed blood effect that illustrates why they should have invested more on the gore. Overall it reminded me of a lesser 80's slasher. Which I definitely mean as a complement. 5.5 Bikinis out of 10. |
