Criterion Johnnie To's 'The Heroic Trio' (1993) - Coming Soon from Criterion Collection

Janus Films is distributing the new restoration of Johnnie To's 'The Heroic Trio. Expect Criterion to release this later.

EDIT: Janus Films have added pages for 'The Heroic Trio' and its sequel 'Executioners' to their website, so it looks like we might be getting a double-pack from Criterion.

While it would be nice to see, I believe both films are still under Kino Lorber (or is it Tartan?). I wish Criterion (or anyone really) would sign a deal with Milkyway Image just so I can get proper releases of 'Breaking News' and 'Blind Detective'. Hell, I just want to see a proper release of 'The Mission.

I'll take all of those. I think Tartan might have lost the rights to the Election films, as they are OOP (I believe). Their Blu-ray of those films were probably the worst looking Blu-rays I've seen. The Mission is long overdue, and Breaking News would be great.

Suddenly I feel lucky for finding (and buying) Election 2 on DVD for $0.47 at Big Lots.

The Mission has been so obscure for more than a decade now (no physical media release since the early 2000s and little to no repertory cinema screening) that these days I live in fear somehow there remains no proper film material to restore anymore.

Some excellent news. With the label releasing "Throw Down" and now this, I'm hoping they're able to showcase more of his catalogue down the road.

If I'm not mistaken, the most decent version of The Mission was on VCD. The DVD released, if I recall, had a huge glaring issue...a transluscent TaiSeng logo was watermarked in the middle of the screen throughout the whole movie.

This was previously with Miramax, but I imagine their US rights had long expired since it was pulled digitally a while ago. I believe it comes from Media Asia (who acquired the catalog of one of the producers) and they have recently worked with Criterion for some of the Wong Kar Wai stuff they control.

It's being licensed from Fortune Star Media, same as Throw Down, and the Bruce Lee (besides Enter the Dragon), and Police Story sets.

This is a little confusing for me, so is Milkyway with Fortune Star/Golden Harvest? For example Throwdown was licensed from Fortune Star, but it's a Milkyway film. So does that mean films like The Mission, Exiled, and the Election films are also with Fortune Star/Golden Harvest?

fyi- this was my very first purchase of physical media (on DVD). Definitely has nostalgic/historic memories for me.

No, I think Media Asia is right; it's even mentioned on the rear cover of some releases.

I’ll be honest, I never even heard of this film until I saw a post by dawnofthediscs (which is the exact reason why I follow that page since I don’t catch every thread started here) and I gotta say, cast alone I am very intrigued, but the overall premise is awesome. I am really looking forward to seeing this.

Is that in the US? or internationally?
