Are Canada PS3 games any different?

I want to get the Batman: Arkham City Steelbook from Future Shop but I want to make sure it will play fine on my U.S. system.

I know Mortal Kombat is somehow region locked online when you try to play with friends in other countries ... anyone have any experience with canada PS3 games or ordering from future shop?

PS3 games are region free. Just like how PSP games are.

though with Mortal Kombat there is some region coding on the online

I don't know if it is the game or the PSN but you can't play with people in other countries

Canada and the US are in the same "region" for PS3 games so even the exceptions to region free (like Mortal Kombat) should be fine

The only difference between the Canadian and US game is Rick Moranis does the voices for everyone on the Canadian version.

P.S. You forgot to mention the extra instruction booklet in French as well.

Aside from the inclusion of French language options, there isn't a single difference betwee Canada and US games. I buy most of my games from Amazon.com and they are US copies (no French). I haven't had any problems yet.

I just realized how different my Uncharted 2 game was since I bought it in Canada. Some of these lines in the game make more sense now.

There IS some difference in packaging between US and Canadian versions. A lot of games in Canada have bilingual box art and/or manuals in both French and English. They also often have support for French language subtitles and/or dubs in-game, due to some stupid law passed in 2009 in Quebec which requires games released in Quebec province to have French dubs and/or subtitles if a localization in French is available.

Occasionally you'll see publishers shrug and just release a bilingual version for all of North America, but "usually" the US version is English-only.

It's stupid because Quebec is the only region where it applies, and it specifically BANS the sale of any game that only offers English if there is any French localization available anywhere else in the world.

It's doubly stupid because Quebecois is barely even recognizable as "French". I spent five years in school studying Parisian French, and I can hold a passable conversation with someone from France, but I can't understand half of what my friends from Montreal say.

In other words, it's a law designed to support "French" as a language, but the "French" that the Quebecois speak is about as similar to "French" as it's spoken in France as Australian English bears to the Queen's Tongue.

EDIT: More to the point, this has caused some games to not even be released in Quebec, forcing people in that region to travel to other parts of Canada to buy the games... because you know, English IS still one of the official languages and everyone there speaks it.

I would love to know what is a Parisian French language if you talk about accent that`s other thing In France and in Quebec the french its writen the same way , but i guess you don`t like french Canadians , and some of your statement barely reaches the racism towards other persons ... not cool .

I think that the point was about the double standard involved with the law in question. Especially when the French police are so ridiculous about fining anyone/everyone who has any type of advertising where the English is larger than the French.

One of my sister's ex-boyfriend had a business in Ontario and his vehicle had the business name painted on his car. He was travelling through Quebec to Nova Scotia and got pulled over by the language police. They fined him almost $500! He wasn't operating in Quebec. He wasn't based in Quebec. He was simply driving a straight line through the province in order to visit family for vacation. They wouldn't even listen to him. He even tried to appeal the fine, but since it had to be settled with the provincial government, he was S.O.L.

Since French AND English are both the languages of the country, there should not be such a prejudicial approach to either in ANY province.

On topic though, the games released in Canada only have any difference in subtitle/audio/instruction support for the French language. Everything about the gameplay is completely identical to the U.S. release.

When i go to Ontario i don`t see any sign written in French !!


I have a hard time to understand that the " language police " thing , still i don`t get it , i worked with a company based with the main office in Ontario and the name is in English and several cars , vans or trucks come to montreal weekly and never got nothing like that , what i know for a fact is .... how police acts ( not the best way anyway ) and this goes both ways , cars from Quebec being fined in Ontario and vice versa .

Yes, I hate French Canadians so much that I have friends that live in Montreal.

My comparison of Quebecois to French (as it's spoken in... you know... France...) is that on paper the language is written in much the same way, but the colloquialisms and odd syllable accents make it almost impenetrably difficult to understand if you're not absolutely fluent (which I am most certainly not).

The point really isn't so much the misguided francophilia of the Quebecois - though I find that amusing too - but rather (as Petra Kalbrain emphasizes above), the absurd double-standard that it imposes.

I can drive over to 300 miles from my house to Miami, FL and find whole neighborhoods where there's not a single word of English spoken and there's not a trace of English to be found on the street signs or businesses. Yet no one complains about it, because it's just not that important.

I don't live there so I can't be sure, but I know I've seen developers complain about catering to such a tiny market over the past couple of years, to the point where it's not even worth the hassle of printing and distributing the alternate versions (because it makes SKU management a nightmare). I know that there were a LOT of games that had to get shipped out of Quebec when the law went into effect (things like SingStar, for instance).

Actually, there's many games in the U.S. that have both English and French text on the cover as well as having English and French text on the instruction booklet.
