Default Some movies 7.1 (or 6.1) even though they say 5.1?

I have a Denon 2310 set to accept Multi Channel PCM input from by Blu-ray player instead of decoding on the Denon. I do this primarily due to the Denon having issues decoding the audio on the Star Wars BR discs.

I've noticed a few movies showing a 7.1 multi channel track even though it's only supposed to be 5.1. A few examples are Blade Runner and Harry Potter Deathly Hallows pt 1.

Any Ideas?

Do you have any 5.1 titles that actually display 5.1 on your receiver? If you don't then you need to change a setting on your receiver.

Yes, I do. This is why I'm confused. Keep in mind, I allow the player to decode and send the audio via HDMI Ext In. One movie will display as 5.1 and some will display as 7.1

Try changing the player to bitstream instead of sending as LPCM to your receiver.

I have it set as PCM due to the fact that the Denon has issues decoding the bitstream of Star Wars. So I leave it as PCM so I don't have to change it all the time. What's weird is that those movies that are designated as 5.1 but stream 7.1 PCM is that I can hear audio coming from my back surrounds as though it is actually 7.1 (or 6.1) and I do not have my receiver set up to matrix 7.1 from 5.1 material.

This is not at all an inconvienence, just mind boggling and I was wondering if anybody else is noticing this.

You got me. I would personally exchange your Star War set and then see it if it works with bitstream.

it happens with me on my Blu-ray player Panasonic BD-35 you should set your player to bitstream rather than decoding inside your player.Concerning your Star wars BD if you have the latest firmware you are safe to go.

Are those the Star Wars DVD's? I believe they had an issue with their EX mixes a few years back and the flags would be incorrect.

Any issues w/ any other discs besides Star Wars?

The problem with the Star Wars discs and Denon receivers when bitstreaming audio is well known. Switching to PCM is the only fix.

I don't buy overpriced Denon equipment so that would be why I was clueless.

You own an Onkyo receiver and speakers. You can't really look down on someone elses equipment.

Nothing wrong with Onkyo whatsoever. Other than the 606 cheap Chinese HDMI board debacle they've done just fine by me.

And I'm sure he enjoys his Denon receiver as much as I do and you your Onkyo.

Denon receivers are not overpriced anyway. So not only were you acting like a child, but you were also blatantly wrong to boot.

The firmware of the player has absolutely nothing to do with bitstreaming audio to a receiver for decoding on the receiver end, it's all to do with the receiver. Having said that, updating the firmware of the Denon might help, but that option is not available to me.

I don't exactly watch Star Wars everyday, so I guess I'll just switch back to bitstreaming and change it when I watch SW.

It costs well over $100 more for the exact same receiver in terms of power and features from Denon when compared to Onkyo. If you don't think that's overpriced then more than $100 obviously means little to you.

Why do you care? What does it matter in this discussion?

Since you initiated the discussion, because for some baffling reason you had a problem with me saying Denon is overpriced, I was going to ask you the same thing. It's no different than most products from Apple, Sony, and Pioneer.

I used to have an Onkyo, and last year I decided to upgrade to one with HDMI. I considered Onkyo once more, Denon, and a few other. They were all about the same price. I wound up going with the Denon this time. Love it, sounds great with my Klipsch speakers.

They're both good receivers.
