Default Disney re-releasing movies

Why is Disney re-releasing Ratatouille, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean in other editions? I know some of them are movie tie in's but unless you have new special features what gives?

They're new "Bundle" packs, which include a DVD. The first editions didn't have a DVD Copy included.

Yeah, and in my opinion its mostly a waste of time. Many of these films have been out on DVD for years, before the Blus came out, so combining the two just seems like a rehash, for Disney to make more money in a short timeframe. I already had the DVDs of "National Treasure 1 & 2", and the "Pirates" trilogy; I got rid of them when I upgraded to hi-def. If I'd wanted to keep them in a set with the Blus, I'd have done so on my own. The whole "combo pack" deal for older releases just seems silly to me.

Your logic seems conflicting. It's not a waste of time if they make money off them.

It's easier to make money off BDs they have already authored, than to turn a profit on a title where no work has been done before. That is why they have abandoned most catalog properties on Blu-ray.

Disney hasn't abandoned catalog titles as they are still releasing a ton of their catalog titles on Blu-ray including the diamond collection, non diamond movies and Ghibli titles as well as Pixar films. Disney has no way abandon catalog movies.

Well, in any case, the only Disney films I currently have on Blu are "Beauty & The Beast", the "National Treasure" films, the first two "Narnia" entries, "Race to Witch Mountain", and the "Pirates" trilogy. I do have a few on DVD though, like "Lion King", "Mary Poppins", "Jungle Book", and the first "Mighty Ducks". When these films hit Blu, I'll probably ditch my older copies, unless the extras aren't ported over for the hi-def versions.

Exactly. That's one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen.

I sometimes think that people consider studios having abandoned catalog films, just cause they don't release every film on Blu-Ray they own at once.

Not even considering that if they flood the replication lines or the market, both of which would hurt the industry.

Another thing to note about the Disney "re-releases" --- a lot of them are sharing the same SKU as the previous version.

The previous versions usually came with a Digital Copy, which at this point as expired. No reason to keep a production on the shelf which contains an expired disc. Better to pull them and replace them with a DVD.

Yeah I really like how Disney does it with giving us a lot of titles but not to fast and not to slow. By 2014 I should have most of my favorite Disney films.

They are only doing it with non-vault movies...

Also... it's not a huge investment since they are taking the previous masters for the Blu-ray... and combining with the previous master for the DVD... and just putting both in the same package.

It actually makes sense... if they slowly replace their old Blu-ray and DVD offerings (when the stock runs dry) with one SKU that has both copies in a single package.

They might even save money on a combo pack IF they obsolete their older separate SKUs.

And if they keep the prices low... people can buy one and get both formats... and eventually some current DVD-player-owners will upgrade to Blu and already have some Disney Blus to watch.

Plus, you have to consider that many of the titles being re-released were titles that were released early in Blu-Ray's life. So, there are many people just now adopting Blu-Ray that, if they are not re-released, will not get press and wouldn't sell as many copies.

Do the Disney digital copies expire? I'll have to pay closer attention for an expiration date the next time I buy a Disney title with a digital copy. I know WB digital copy codes expire. I had one expire the day before I went to redeem it.

I'm one of those people who just recently adopted the Blu-ray format. I for one am glad to see these re-releases, mostly the Pixar titles, since I missed them the first time around.

I still need Ratatouille, Wall-E and Pirates 1 on blu-ray, and if the re-releases bring forth new coupons, sales and discounts, then I will be able to pick them up cheaper than if they were not re-released, seeing as how the prices only go down when something new is released.

Because Disney knew they is some collector love to double dip.

Anyway I don't might they re-release, as it still plenty of title I not own yet, and possible for people that not yet invest in blu-ray, at least re-release came with slipcover without worried.

Disney controls thousands of movies in its catalog. So people here are happy we are getting less than 15 catalog Blu-rays a year? Of course the most famous animated movies will see a release, but everything else is being left to rot.

The 'famous' animated movies will always be the first to be restored and/or released on a new medium.

They're guaranteed to make $$. The lesser known titles aren't guaranteed to make money. The restoration process is time consuming and expensive (at least the way Disney has handled their titles thus far) and if they took an easier route and spent less time and money on restoring the classics people would complain.

Also roughly 15 releases a year from Disney seems pretty good to me (and my wallet), and I'm sure it's actually on the high side to most consumers.

Well, I know one film that some have repeatedly asked Disney to release over the years is "Song of the South". However, the execs have consistently refused, claiming its release would "offend certain people". Truthfully, its about some folks being "politically-correct", and taking offense over things which, when seen in their proper context, aren't offensive. It's that same kinda crowd that got miffed over the original lyrics to "Arabian Nights", or had WB execs so worried that they placed racial disclaimers on the recent "Looney Tunes" boxsets.
