Default Buy a Sequel without owning Original?

So I was wondering, I was a little cash strapped this summer and couldn't finally buy "Iron Man" or the original "Toy Story" films as I'd planned. I netflixed the Blu-rays instead. Now that I've seen them recently, I don't feel like I need to see them again. "Iron Man 2" and "Toy Story 3" however, I may buy this fall.

Ever done anything similar? You own a sequel but somehow not the original?

Nope, it's either all or nothing for me. I did buy Crank after renting it, but sold it after renting Crank 2 since it was terrible when compared to the first one.

Yea, I got Child's Play 4 an 5 because they were more humorous and didn't take themselves seriously. The first 3 Child's Play films seemed to try to be serious.

I am usually a completist but there are exceptions, such as I own 28 Weeks Later but not 28 Days Later.

Yeah, it's all or nothing for me. Heck, I own all four Terminator's even though I'd only classify the second one as a favorite. When I buy an entry in a series I have to own them all. It's a sickness most likely.

That's a good way of looking at it: a sickness.

If you watched the first parts and don't feel the need to watch them again, then why do you think you'll watch the sequels more than once? They are virtually the same films... although Iron man 2 was pretty sub-par compared to the first.

Most of the time, it's the other way around. I own the original and not some of the follow ups.

Examples are Nightwatch (owned) - skipped Daywatch

Xmen, X2 Owned - skipped X3, Wolverine

As for 28 days later, I own the DVD and will probably never buy the bluray. Own 28 weeks later on blu.

And to the OP - Ironman was a better movie in terms of story and pacing than Ironman 2.

I do not own "Batman Begins" on Blu-ray, yet I own "The Dark Knight" on Blu-ray. I still have "Begins" on DVD though.

Hey, I bought the new Star Trek movie without owning any other movie in the series, and what did I do? I bought the other 10 previous movies without having ever seen any of them.

Turns out some of them were actually better than the new one, so not always a negative sickness.

For the most part I have to own all the movies in a series, but I don't own the original Terminator because it was rumored that a new, remastered version was coming so I haven't got that yet but I have the other 3. I also have Spiderman 3 but not the first 2 because I got Spiderman 3 for free when I got my 40 gig PS3 and didn't want to buy the set when I already had 1 of the movies. I figured they would release the first 2 individually, but that still hasn't happened.

Reminds me, the best example I have is:

Wrath of Khan - owned. Don't own Star Trek TMP.

I have Night at the Museum 2 on blu but not the original.

I had the first one on DVD but gave it away to my aunt.

I planned to upgrade it one day, but eventually decided not to and just have the second one.

Only reason I would own sequel and not the original is if its not out on BD.

Same here; I read the on-site review for "Begins", and decided I'd wait until they improve the picture and sound for a new Blu-Ray release. I'm also holding off on the Blu of "Iron Man" until September; I thought I'd get them both at the same time.
