PTU (Masters of Cinema) Blu-ray - June 21st, 2021

New Announcement | PTU, an immersive crime thriller from Johnnie To, will be released on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK as part of The Masters of Cinema Series from 21 June 2021. The first print run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited-Edition O-card Slipcase.

Set against a Hong Kong that never sleeps, a stolen police gun triggers a suspenseful chain of events. Tracking down his missing gun before dawn, Sergeant Lo first has his car vandalised and is then beaten up. Suddenly he finds himself edged between two gangs on the brink of a bloodbath, whilst at the same time staving off investigations by both Vice Squad and Homicide Units embroiled in their own turf war. His only lifeline is a maverick Police Tatical Unit squad who have one night to help him find his gun.

An atmospheric noir thriller from director Johnnie To, The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present PTU in its UK debut on Blu-ray.

The Running Out of Time movies and Running on Karma might be on the radar. On one hand, there's titles that have been given bluray releases (with existing HD scans) in Hong Kong in the past that no overseas distributor have released yet... The aforementioned ones, Breaking News, Exiled, and Sparrow. On the other, we have Expect the Unexpected, The Longest Nite, and A Hero Never Dies (previously released on bluray in Japan) that were given bluray releases in France last year. Let's see what happens.

Never seen this one butI ordered the U.S. Dragon Dynasty DVD for $6 to watch it, see if I like it. If I do I’ll grab the Eureka! BD.

PTU is an excellent movie, I wish we could have a box set of all the PTU films though, it's a great series.

I found the Tactical Unit films in a charity shop, of all places, for a fantastic price. Helpfully, someone had shelved them together with an elastic band. Most of them are indeed excellent (the second is my favourite). I'd welcome a Blu of all the films.

Running Out of Time 1&2 are with Fortune Star who Eureka have licensed from before, but that's not always a guarantee as they also have many films from John Woo (The Killer, A Better Tomorrow 1&2, Bullet in the Head) and Ringo Lam (City on Fire, Prison on Fire, School on Fire) that Eureka haven't managed to get. I asked them about Woo and they implied it was very complicated and unrealistic, so perhaps it's not as simple as licensing directly from Fortune Star.

That said, they've had better luck with To so never say never!

From memory (and what I have read on these boards) Fortune Star only have the Asian distribution rights to the Woo films, other territories sit with Golden Princess who are no longer in the movie business and don't have any desire to license these out.

Interesting. I wonder how 88 Films got Heroes Shed No Tears from Fortune Star then...maybe it's one of the few Woo films they have the UK rights for too?

I do hope Eureka can release Breaking News at some point too. My Hong Kong blu doesn’t work anymore (last time I checked anyway, though I doubt it would have miraculously started working again since).

HEROES is Golden Harvest. The issues are with the Golden Princess titles.

Can't say I like the music choice of this trailer (especially considering the actual film has a fantastic electric guitar theme), but of course, that doesn't make any difference in my double-dipping this masterpiece.

Now I can finally and gladly get rid of my 13-year-old US Dragon Dynasty DVD with the ridiculous cover image, since all three interviews on the disc will be ported over to the Eureka release... wait, that DVD has the Bey Logan commentary, damn it! Oh, well... at least I will be able to get rid of my Hong Kong Mei Ah Blu-ray, I guess.

Received a dispatch email this morning for PTU (along with Encounter of the Spooky Kind). Another great one to add to the Johnnie To blu-ray collection.
Have owned the Third Window dvd for ages, and never bothered with the older HK blu due to the apparent watermark that appears every so often, so looking forward to seeing an upgraded version.

Hopefully more To will follow (I really hope Eureka release Breaking News so I can replace my HK version which no longer plays).
