Default C'mon Disney!!!!

When reading on UltimateDisney.com about the Rocketeer Blu-ray, they made an interesting note:

Quote:
It will become the second oldest live-action movie the studio has released to Blu-ray, trailing only the original Tron.
Then I started thinking, aside from Tron and Rocketeer, all the live action titles Disney (actual Disney, not TouchStone) have been from 2000 or later. So, where's all the catalog live action from the 90s, 80s or before. Where's stuff like Jungle 2 Jungle, The Santa Clause 1 or even Flubber? Surely they must already have high def transfers. Then there's classics like Mary Poppins, which has had countless DVD releases with what appear to be a transfer from an HD source? And where's all the animated stuff sure we they're making their way to Blu-ray but at what rate, we get three in the span of a couple of months then we go six months with nothing.

Remember in the early days of DVD, they came up with the Gold Classic Collection, where they vowed to release a different catalog title every month. And for a year or two, they didn't just meet that promise but sometimes gave us more. How about a collection like that with the same promise?

It's interesting. I was just thinking last week they could release any animation from the 80's, and I would be happy.

Yeah, Disney has been slow with releasing their older title. Only about a quarter of their pre-2000 animated feature films have been released. On the plus side they normally do great work with the transfers so its worth the wait.

However, I agree that I would love to see some of the 90's Disney live-action films get released at a faster pace, since I grew up with those films. Mighty Ducks Trilogy, Cool Runnings, A Far Off Place, Jungle Book (live-action), Mighty Joe Young, etc.

Disney isn't all that fond of most of the films from around that period, so don't expect them any time soon. If we do get some of those, expect a Fox and the Hound-esque restoration.

I would agree that it takes a long time for older titles to come out. But it's my understanding that replication is the key issue. There are only so many places that do it and with new titles coming out each week, I think studio's have a hard time getting to back titles. Also it the 80's and such, I'm sure they are taking their time transferring to blu. I've been way disappointed in a few releases from those decades, such as Uncle Buck, From Dusk till Dawn (so-so) and Overboard to name a few. I think we just have to be Happy with what is coming and hope they get to the good titles soon. Besides, I like looking forward to things and This September has a lot of great titles coming, So I'll be broke anyway. Scarface and Star Wars were two I was looking forward too for a while. Lion King is just around the corner too.

Heck, how about some live action films from my day? Apple Dumpling Gang, Old Yeller, Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, The Shaggy Dog, The Love Bug, Swiss Family Robinson, or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, etc.

Unless, of course, the masters are so screwed up that they wouldn't look good on Blu.

Weren't they already busy with Mary Poppins? The problem with that title is that they need to recomposite the special effects scenes, so that's going to take some time and money.
I do know they're working on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, where they're trying to eliminate the so called 'CinemaScope mumps', the distortion that early CinemaScope lenses had. I'm not sure I like what they're doing, but Disney always felt the need to make their movies seem less dated as possible.

Hence why their movies, no matter how old, still sell.

I have not seen Fox and the Hound on blu ray yet. So I can not comment on how it looks (to me).

But personally, I would rather them release a subpar transfer on blu ray, then never release it.

Really? I thought it was because of the timeless stories and beautiful art they have. I never would have guessed that throwing DNR onto a movie and altering the colors would generate bigger audiences than making creative movies.

All of those would be absolutely amazing on Blu Ray, especially Mighty Ducks. I also would like to see Swiss Family Robinson

You may not like them, but some people do. What is wrong with adding more movies to the blu ray family?

I think their best live action movies go back into the 1960s, movies with Kirk Douglas and Kurt Russell, among other stars. Off the top of my head I can think of:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Swiss Family Robinson
The Love Bug
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Mary Poppins
