Default stand alone or PS3, see alot of mixed reviews

hi all, well i have been reading alot of reviews of the different stand alone BD models and on the PS3 and i am not sure what to make of it.

is it easier and better just to buy a PS3 for watching movies only? i am not a gamer at all, so i thought a stand alone was for me. but all the reviews i have read seems to steer me to a PS3 due to if being faster, more equipped for sound and the future of dts hd sound.

does anyone have any opinions on this matter, also read alot of mixed reviews on the sony bds300 player. that was the model i was planning on buying in the next month or so. no i dont know what to do. does the ps3 have audio hook ups such as fiber optic or just hdmi?

totally confused.

Hello there. First of all, yes the PS3 has an optical connection for audio.

To answer your main question, I personally would choose the PS3 even if you are only watching movies on it and nothing else. Reason? because it's going to be compatible with Blu-ray profile 1.1 and 2.0 whereas existing stand alone players may or may not be upgradeable to 1.1 via a firmware upgrade and definitely won't be 2.0 compatible. PS3 is also faster loading as you've mentioned. Re-sale on a PS3 would be better as well because it has more demand than a stand-alone.

^^^^Yup

I bought a PS3 and although I have played some game demos, I mainly just use it for watching movies. Cheap, effective, upgradeable, nice design and fast!

Who could ask for more?

so you are saying that the ps3 will be more upgradable down the road for further updates and fine tuning the unit? so it has hdmi and audio connections on the back as well?

thanks for your help

I bought a stand alone player for the analog outputs. I'm not a gamer and the stand alone fits the look of my entertainment center better.

I guess it is an individual decision, and you have to get the player that fit your needs.

Good luck on your decision!

60gig is a great start. You can upgrade the drive later on with no problems. No need to spend more on an 80gig.

Amazon is doing their 7 free deal still.

Also, here's the official site that shows the free stuff for the 5 free deal.

You may also want to read this.

They state that while the P3 is a great player, the video quality of stand alones are better.

So you don't trust "professional" reviews?
It's not like they don't use lab equipment to measure performance or they deal with equipment that usually does a much better job of revealing video differences than what you or I have at home.
But, of course if you are happy with your PS3, that is all that matters to you isn't it?

But for others it may not be.
If he (or she) is looking to put it in a closed cabinet with other audio equipment, the PS3 would not be my first choice regardless of the performance.
It runs way to hot for that.

Well, you can read an "experts" advice from the link I posted.
This is a PS3 crowd here, so the bias would tend to swing in that direction.
