Default Online closure in days

With the WiiU and 3DS both losing all online gaming in a few days time, is there any reason to keep either connected to the internet? I'm really going to miss playing MarioKart online on both, it's not a great game as a single player, and Onrush on the PS4 has lost it's appeal since that lost it's online. It's frustrating as both MarioKarts both still get significant online players.

You should probably hack your 3DS and Wii U sooner rather than later. I have a hacked 2DS and it was pretty easy to do (though it may be trickier if you updated yours to the latest firmware). Frankly, since Nintendo already shut down the eShop and stopped selling 3DS and Wii U games (and seemingly has no plans to make them available again outside of overpriced Switch ports), I see no moral problem with hacking your consoles and downloading whatever you want.

I have a Wii in another room that's modded so it can run things via a Homebrew channel. As far as I know the same can be done on the WiiU's built-in Wii emulator. I still need to get some compatible Mame ROMs for it, for some reason most of my Mame ROMs won't work on the wiiU. I'm not really sure what to do beyond that. I'm assuming here that the Wii Homebrew programs can still be obtained.

Beyond that I'm not really sure what to do with it.

Other than maybe needing to re-download a game for the wiiU or 3ds again, there isn't any use for the internet on either as far as I can tell?

I have enough to keep me going

Also note that the Wii U NAND memory is starting to fail for some folks that have left the console unused for a while. Voultar has a recovery tool.

You can hack it to play Wii U games, for one thing. Plus, why go through Wii mode to run emulators when you can just run them natively? There's also a Miiverse reimplementation in the works and homebrew apps available.

All gaming, except some Pokémon thing which apparently being excluded for some reason.

MarioKart still gets a lot of online players on both the WiiU and 3DS, it's out of order pulling the plug on that. Why they go but Pokémon is saved, I don't know.

Today is the last day for online play on the WiiU and 3DS.
Decided to have a go on MarioKart7 on the 3DS before it goes, and unfortunately had the unpleasant experience of a nasty Japanese player who kept going the wrong way along the tracks every time he got a Star, ramming everyone. Nasty piece of work, dirty player ruining the last chance to play this online.

RIP Online Service
I fired it up a little while ago just to see, and everything online comes up with 'services closed' type messages. Shame really. Sub Wars Steeldiver still works as a single player, which I wasn't expecting.
Glad I managed to nab a few WiiU and 3DS games from the online stores before Nintendo pulled the plugs on those. I did pretty well on the 3ds, especially as some things I was interested in were on sale at the time, but didn't do great on the WiiU. For some reason a lot of WiiU games had already been taken off the store. Joe's Diner and Annihilation weren't exactly great things to end up with.

Has anybody gotten a patch to download since the closure?

I'm imagining any types of game updates or dlc. I believe Xenoblade Chronicles X has a texture pack to help with asset loading iirc.

From what they said all updates and dlc should still be available indefinitely but I'm pretty sure folks have been having issues since the shutdown.

Wii U was pretty barebones as it is, but with online services shutdown it's even worse. Now, why not hack it and try to make the most of it.

I've played most Wii U titles when it was still coming out so even if I hacked a Wii U (got one on the way) I doubt I'd make much use of it, except perhaps to play some Tekken Tag 2 as the Nintendo content is pretty cool and Mario Kart 8 is always fun.

P.S. I am aware a hacked Wii U can also play GCN/Wii backups so it opens the doors to way more games, and of course... Retro ones, too. DS as well, I think.
