In recent days we've all heard about the eventual blu release of the first movie to be known as a blockbuster "Jaws". For those who may not have read the entire interview http://www.aintitcool.com/node/49921 towards the end the bearded one teased about his own idea for a sequel:
Quint: Do you have any idea what you would have done with a sequel? Steven Spielberg: No, no idea at all, but I have a very, very good scene which I thought would have been good for a sequel someday, which I will tell you someday because I don’t want it in print. Quint: Okay. Steven Spielberg: But I’ll tell you my scene some day. Every time I think of this scene I think, “Hmmm, could this be another Jaws movie?” and I have to immediately stop myself and immediately pull myself back down to Earth. ------- So the speculation could begin. This is actually an interesting idea. If Ridley Scott is going back to his sci-fi roots with the on again off again Alien prequel Prometheus, why not Spielberg for a proper sequel to his original Jaws. Not that Jaws 2 wasn't a worthy follow-up and we won't get into 3 & 4, but hell this could be great. Richard Dreyfuss could easily return. for a gag get Michael Caine for a cameo or Mario Van Peebles is a free agent. I bet Spielberg could convince Lorraine Gary to come out of retirement if in fact the story would still involve the Brody family in some way or another. Nontheless this could scare a whole new generation from going back into the water. Let the speculation begin......... |

Obviously I don't know what Spielberg's scene idea is, but I think a sequel to Jaws is a very bad idea. The first one was a spectacular hit because it was one of the first films of its ilk to have both a relatively large production budget and to take the content seriously. Also, at that time Spielberg still had a non-Hollywood take on the material and the casting of the supporting players was brilliant: most of them seemed like real locals, not actors. That, combined with shooting on location, gave the film a sense of reality that other Hollywood thrillers did not have. And of course all the problems with the mechanical shark actually made for a better film because the shark was of necessity revealed slowly.
And IMO, all of the sequels were terrible. The only interesting aspect of the 2nd film was that Brody thought he was seeing sharks everywhere. And I liked his line about "and you'd better get somebody else because I'm not going out there again!" Other than that, it was a tired retread. Jeanot Szwarc is a great TV director, but not much of a movie director having given us such masterpieces as Somewhere In Time, Supergirl and Santa Claus in addition to Jaws 2. Once we get to Jaws 3, it was just a sad absurdity (or great camp, if you want to interpret it that way.) While Spielberg is a far better director, I think he's lost the magic of his early films, probably because back then he lived in the real world and today he lives the life of a mogul. And even if he could do a great job, I'd rather see him tackle something totally new. |

Spielberg's obviously an extremely creative guy, so I'm sure he has a lot of great ideas swimming around in his head (no pun intended), including an awesome scene for a Jaws sequel.
He's also obviously an extremely smart guy, and I don't think he'll ever do a Jaws sequel. When I read the entire interview, I certainly didn't take it as something he was in any way seriously considering. Interesting to think about though. |

The only way this will work is to tell an ancient American story when the midwest plains were a flooded sea and a large megaladon predator stalked the shores and killed the indigenous inhabitants. They band together to defeat the large goliath with spears, fire, nets, and other ancient weapons.

I don't see it either. This described scene that he envisioned could be translated with sketches or CGI and make a nice addition to the supplemental material for JAWS on Blu-ray, but I don't see him pursuing a sequel anytime soon.

He won't, which is great. He was just talking about a time a long time ago that has (thankfully) passed. It's not like he doesn't have New/Future endeavors on his plate, plus, releasing his catalog on BD like is being down with "JAWS." |

I see it now: Jaws: The Prequel!
Basically about a baby shark that swims around and eats small fish, until it grows bigger then decides to eat humans! It would cover the early, impressionable years of the Jaws shark ![]() Sorry I'm waaaaaaaay bored right now! |
