Default 1000+ Collections

I have seen quite a few people 1000+ Blu-Ray and/or 1000+ DVD. I have 2 questions.

Do you buy all the movies you have because you like them, or might want to try them or do you just buy to collect?

Where and how do you store them?

I am actually rather picky about what movies I purchase. For me to buy a BD it has to be something that me or someone in my family wants to watch repeatedly. Then I have a rather specific pricing system. If it's something I want, but can wait to see it then I don't mind waiting until it's $7-10 for a standard case. If it's something I have to have then somewhere between $15-20 is more likely depending on packaging. If it's a new 3D release that my children have to have then I will pay up to $30, but no more than that. I am actually planning on buying a new shelving unit as I ran out of room a couple months ago. I'll be getting it in March and will post pics then. I plan to have one set of shelves for digibooks, steelbooks, box set, slipcovers, etc. and then the other will be for standard cases. Each section will then be alphabetized.

I buy them to watch...and except for a few TV series, I'm pretty much caught up watching them.

Where I keep them? At this moment I have 8 locations. In the Living Room we have about 70 in the cabinet the TV sits on, mainly recently viewed no slips or sets. I have 5 shelf units in the Family room...one for Criterions and Steelbooks(metal cases), one for Disney and 3D, one for TV shows, one for sets, collections or series of movies, and the last has Digibooks and movies with slips. On top of the units which are only about 4 feet high, we have oversized collectors editions like I am Legend, Ben Hur and Ten Commandments displayed. One shelf unit in the downstairs hallway has just music, musicals and some movies with slips. And the last spot is in the downstairs bedroom which has a ledge running along the wall(split level houses usually have this) and we have about 200 movies without slips along the one wall.

as for other movie versions...thinned DVDs down to under 200 and they are in a "microwave cart" that has my printer on top and BD player in the middle...down to just over 300 LaseDiscs that are under one TV in the family room and in a unit that has the LaserDisc player on top....and VHS the are in storage boxes and 2 Tape storage units in the utility room(haven't had a VHS player hooked up in over 5 years)

I think I'll approach the 1000 mark by late October (currently have just over 800 Blu's) what with all of these awesome titles coming out. But I don't buy movies to put them on a shelf for bragging rights - I actually watch the stuff. I guess you can label me a collector but these type of people usually just buy things to sell them off for a profit. Storage is a huge headache for me as I live in a small apartment. I've got several cheap bookcases and a couple of decent Atlantic Maxsteel units in which I keep the majority of my movies. The rest are kept in a closet (mainly TV shows and DVDs I'd like to get rid of)

while i don't have 1000 blu's....or even close to that many....the in wall shelving unit i built when i remodeled my basement will hold close to 1500 if i remember correctly. That was figuring regular bluray cases….no special editions like the harry potter ultimate editions or indiana jones/die hard packaging sets.

I've been collecting movies since I was 15. It really accelerated over the past ten years or so, and I've amassed my Blu-Ray collection within four years. As it is, I think I've purchased the majority of films I want. I am always exploring new stuff though: I will blind-buy movies that interest me or have good reviews or are made by people I enjoy. I'll buy most anything if it's cheap enough. I'll always keep the ones that I enjoy; Ill even keep some crappy movies, either to be a completist, or because I still get a kick out of them.

As far as storing them goes, I got four big Ikea shelves available, and I might consider more shelves if I need them. I tend to combine some movies into a case, I've put some in thinner cases, and I use binders for all TV shows and for DVDs I've also got on Blu-Ray. The combination of all that keeps the collection within the 3-4 shelves I have. I have some older pics of it all in my HT gallery.

Combining both Blu-Rays and DVDs, I probably have over 2,000 individual titles. And yet, I have no plans on slowing down or stopping my collecting; I love all these films, and there's still so much to see and collect.

I am coming close to 1300 movies, with blu accounting for just over half of them. I've been buying since DVD first hit the market and the main reason I started was becasue at that time you couldn't find any place to rent them. If Iwanted to enjoy the superior sound and picture it was the only way to do so. Blockbuster and every other place only rented VHS and it took them a long time before starting to rent DVD, so I was well entrenched in the collecting mode by then and couldn't simply stop buying. In the begining prices were high of course but at this point movies are so readily available that I generally don't buy anything over $10. I do oftern buy used from reputable and proven places.

To answer some of your questions;
I do buy to watch. I watch every single movie I buy. My collection is kept upstairs but nothing is put into the main collection until it is watched. I have a small place downstairs in the family room where I keep unwatched movies as I buy them. Once watched I move them into the collection

On a rare occation, I will buy to collect but I still watch every single movie I buy. For example. All five Rocky movies are exactly oscar winners, but I will almost always complete a set such as this one, or Star Wars etc. If I have one, I will almost always continue the set as long as they keep making them. Bond (007) is another one, yes I have "Never Say Never again" despite the questionable quality and the controversy over it by James Bond enthusiasts.

At a certain price, I will blind buy movies just for the fun of it and take a shot. Five or six bucks for a movie I've never heard of (if it looks relatively decent) is worth it for 2 hours of entertainment for my wife and I. Some are horrible and some turn out to be pretty good, but the price has to be right in this situation.

The last reason I buy is to upgrade from DVD. If I'm double dipping on a movie it is usually something I really enjoyed and I almost never buy at full price, I usually wait long after it's release for the price to drop considerably.

In terms of storing them, I've converted a closet in a spare bedroom to house all of them. One side of the close it set up in a "U" shape and shelved from floor to ceiling, they are all alphabetical. I estimate the way I have it currently I can store about 1800, at which point I will have to duplicate that design on the other side of the closet. I'm lucky enough to not need that closet for other things, such as children, so in the end I will be fine up until around 3600 movies. I don't plan to reach that number for quite a while. Over the years I buy less movies because mose catalogue titles are already relased so I'm buying mostly just new release stuff at this point. Before, I was buying new releases plus older titles as they were released.

I definitely do have an addiction(had over 2000 DVDs before collecting blu-rays ) When I first started with blu-rays, I was planning to buy only the ones that I know I love.

But when the blockbuster stores were going out of business and started selling their blu-rays for $1-$4, it was all over (during that time, it was rare for blu-rays to go below $10, so )
I blind-bought over 200 titles that had good reviews or the ones that looked interesting. Then the Warner Bros. had their trade in DVDs program for $5. Then Bestbuy had their own Upgrade & Save program. Couple of Black Friday where blu-ray was $5 or even lower Those added up

Now I don't buy anything on the release date unless it has some exclusive content. And wait until it gets around $10 for the movies I know I love($15 for 3D titles). And $5 for blind-buys that look interesting.
I do buy some titles just to collect if it's cheap enough. Like some mediocre sequels to complete a collection.(Fast and Furious, Harry Potter, Ice Age, etc) I always buy the boxset even if I don't like one of the sequels (Godfather, Rocky, 007, etc) But I definitely do and plan to watch ALL of them.

Storage has become a problem.
All my shelf has been filled up (half of my room is shelf ) so I have been removing my DVDs from the shelf and been putting my blu-rays up. I hate the blockbuster cases, so all of those movies are in a binder(except really good movies which I got separate blu-ray case for). And if it's a sequel to something, I put it in the same case with the original movie(remove a DVD from some combo pack then put the blu-ray there with reversing the other cover) and make my own combo set. This actually saved me a lot of space and looks good.

I've been collecting since the days of VHS. The bluray experience is by far my biggest collection I have ever embarked on. Like most of the previous posts I choose films based on cast/director sometimes the producer and on occasion will blind buy if the review or the majority of fellow movie buffs recommend it. I usually purchase two movies at a time unless of course their is a great deal to be had. Black Friday is always a great day to score some popular titles and or back catalog stuff for dirt cheap prices. I've also become more patient for impulse buys and usually can wait to pick-up a title after it drops in price. My only rule of thumb for a day 1 purchase if it is something I must have right away and or is a limited edition or something along those lines. I keep my collection on a standard store issued shelf (the ones for CD/DVD's) but modified it slightly to fit the blu cases.

I've been collecting since about 2000, and now have nearly 1000 blus and over 1000 DVDs for a grand total of about 2123 unique movies.

I try to watch everything I buy, but lately my buying has far outpaced my watching thanks to $5 blus from Best Buy's Upgrade and Save over the past year. I probably have about 400 unwatched blus and 200 unwatched DVDs. Of those probably about 150-200 are movies that I've never seen. If I stopped collecting right now I might catch up with my watching in a year and a half.

When I bought my house in 2009, I made built-in shelves in a spare bedroom that go from the ceiling to the floor. At the time (I only had a little over 200 blus then), it seemed like plenty of space but now I'm about to fill it up!

the price is a big factor. I am nowhere even close to 1000+ blurays but i have several hundred dvds and i find that even now I am adding to that collection because of being able to find movies for cheap. you'll find that set of 10 old westerns for $9.99 and buy it even though you may not know any of the movies just because even one decent movies makes it worth while. and with Blockbuster going out of business, i was able to add several movies for only a fraction of the cost and a lot of those were blurays. the nice thing is that there are more and more collectors editions coming out on bluray(Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes, etc) so i find i am starting to buy those more so the collection builds.

I "only" have 619 Blu-rays. But I also have more than 110 HD DVDs and still something like 100 DVDs, for a total of more than 800. I store them in a custom shelving unit (built into the wall) next to our main TV. The shelving unit is almost 8-feet tall and a bit more than 6-feet wide. The upper third is reserved for knick-knacks and I get the lower two-thirds of the shelving unit for the movie collection.

I am running out of space! Going forward, I'll be concentrating more on titles that replace existing DVDs. But, eventually, I'll have to move some part of the collection to another area. I don't plan to quit collecting anytime soon.

I have about 550 total titles (including TV seasons on DVD), and even I think that's completely insane.

I don't know that I could ever justify a 1000+ collection. Not trying to be judgmental, that's just me.

It all depends how much of a film nut you are. In my case I am one to the Nth degree. However, I still value quality over quantity believe or not.

You wouldn't have to justify it, this isn't Russia.

Lol. My family is Russian, actually. Don't know if "octagon" got the news, but Soviet Russia collapsed about 20 years ago, comrade. I know people over there with collections that would put yours to shame.

Now if we could only erase Yakov Smirnoff from the public consciousness...

I think anyone who thinks it's crazy to have large film libraries shouldn't really be joining movie forums.

We have our Blu-Ray.com post of the year, I think. The deadpan tone of this, combined with the precise delivery, really makes this comment hilarious to me. Congratulations.

More specifically, they shouldn't really be joining movie collection forums. This is a website, not just about movies, but specifically about owning movies in a certain format.

Anyways, I plan to stop at 777 blus, but I'm not even a third there yet.
