Heylo, I'm quite familiar with what it takes to make a film or show HD-capable i.e. filmed on film/hd cameras etc.
I just wondered what medium Frasier was created with? Was it SD early on and HD in like the last 2 seasons? Wondering if it will only ever be DVD. |

One of the co-creators, David Lee, reportedly said, "We use four cameras and film in front of a studio audience. Each camera has a different shot, i.e. closeup, two shot, master. 'Frasier' is shot on film, not on videotape."
If that is indeed true, that it was shot on film, then it can be remastered onto Blu-ray like Pride and Prejudice has been. I hope they bring it out soon, even if they just release the first season to test how much demand there is for Frasier on Blu-ray. |

I know this topic is old, but Frasier is by far my favorite sitcom of all time. Recently I have seen Seinfeld HD on TV, and that got me thinking about Frasier HD. I'm sure glad to hear it was recorded on film, as that makes it much easier to release in HD.

Seeing as it would be released by CBS, I don't think a BD release would happen anytime soon. They're very slow with releasing their shows, and only released Seasons 1 and 9 of CSI.
![]() Maybe one day though, it was shot on film and I believe there are HD transfers in circulation and in syndication. I just hope they will be able to open the frame to give us a widescreen transfer! Fingers crossed anyway, hopefully in a few years we'll get Frasier. I most definitely don't mind shelling out for the complete collection again! As long as it's excellent quality! ![]() ![]() |

Well I can say this is definitely one of my favorite shows, and I've recently watched all the episodes on DVD, but if they were on Blu-ray I would pounce! The first few seasons look especially bad on DVD, poor colors, fuzzy lines, this show needs to be on Blu-ray!!!

According to IMDB Frasier was shot on 35mm film with Mitchell BNCR and Panavision Cameras and Lenses.
Promising! Let's just hope they filmed it at 3 perf and then cropped the image to a 4:3 image. But, of course, if there is no way to open up the frame to give us some additional information for a widescreen broadcast a la Friends then I must urge CBS to not crop it and just put this out in it's original aspect ratio. But if there is a wider version, then it's a no-brainer, isn't it?! ![]() |

It would be nice, but I have my doubts whether it'll happen. Making a high-def transfer could be a very involved process. The original footage might have been captured on film, but like a lot of tv shows in the 90's, it was probably edited and mastered on video. That means that the show would have to be recut, re-edited, sound-synced, - basically going through post-production all over again for a ~10 year show. Not cheap! The fact that it was a multi-camera show only complicates matters.
Besides, this was a very dialogue-driven show, mostly shot on one of two smallish sets. It wasn't exactly known for breathtaking cinematography. If you wanted it, it's been out on DVD for years - there may not be enough of a demand to justify the expense of releasing it on blu-ray. I suspect there's a lot of shows(and movies) that will never come out on blu. Hell, there are plenty that never came to DVD, and that was standard def! |

I'm almost certain it was edited on video, because my DVDs don't upconvert well at all, which points to a transfer made from SD material. While the overall appearance of the show points to it being shot on film, much like Star Trek: TNG, it suffers from the inherent fuzziness and muted colors that come with being edited on SD video. So unfortunately, for an HD release to be possible, it would more than likely have to be reassembled shot-for-shot, just like TNG. And while Star Trek is a profitable enough franchise to justify the cost of doing this, sadly, a sitcom that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013 is not.

I do not buy the argument that shows are not worth the expense, HD is here to stay going forward everything has to be HD so while it might not make sense to justify the cost doing it properly just for Blu Ray you can bet your ass they will eventually do a full HD master one way or another at the very least for syndication and from there a Blu Ray is just down the road. And I think you underestimate the following if a sitcom such as this, Friends, Frasier, Cheers, these shows easily out performed Star Trek TNG so this whole notion that they don't justify the cost because they are not as big, whatever if anything it only proves that if Star Trek TNG can be done on Blu Ray anything can because it did not have no where near the ratings as most big name sitcoms. Frasier had higher ratings in it's lowest rated season than TNG did in it's highest rated season and Cheers, friends, and Seinfeld all had higher ratings than Frasier.

What the Trek nerds fail to realize is that there are, in fact, many movies and TV shows with a MUCH larger fan base. Yeah, I like TNG as much as the next guy, but if I had to choose between getting just one of them on Blu-ray, I wouldn't even hesitate for a second to say I'd rather have Frasier. Most of the TNG episodes were really lame, especially in the first few seasons. By the time the show started getting good, they canceled it. Frasier, on the other hand, was hilarious and very watchable right from the first season. It has excellent replay value, even though it's been off the air for 9 years already. CBS would have to be completely retarded on an epic scale not to release Frasier on Blu-ray. What are they expecting? That 25 years from now people are still going to be watching DVD-quality garbage? I've already reached the point TWO YEARS AGO where I stopped buying DVDs. I mean, how could anyone tolerate DVD resolution (and the aspect ratio) on 50 and 60-inch TVs? Even on a 22-inch monitor, DVD quality barely passes for what I would deem acceptable. Bring on Frasier in Blu-ray format as soon as possible! |
