United Kingdom Room At The Top (Jack Clayton / 1959)

Spectacular film. Spectacular transfer. A bargain.

I went into this not liking the lead guy. Was ready to turn it off after 30 minutes, but then it picked up and became one of the best films I've seen recently. I was surprised by the ending.

I think Jack Clayton is one of the most under appreciated directors. Everything I've seen by him is fantastic.

I've been meaning to watch this again. Are there reviews for this new restoration?

I bought and watched this a couple weeks ago--the transfer is excellent.

I screened Something Wicked This Way Comes, and it is the first Clayton film I've seen that isn't great. Probably because of Disney's interference. The most surprising thing was the lousy acting by the two main child leads. Directing children was always one of Clayton's strengths in his earlier films. The film felt like a three way tug of war between Bradbury, Clayton and Disney. I could see what each of them wanted the film to be, and it kept rotating between them.

There's also a 70s TV series, Man at the Top, and a movie spinoff made by Hammer, available on a DVD set from Network.

Does anyone have Studio Canal's new Vintage Classics release of this and knows how it compares with the BFI release? (It was released on March 11th).

https://vintageclassicsfilm.co.uk/mo...om-at-the-top/ says:

"RESTORATION DETAILS
Room at the Top was restored in 2k by the BFI in 2019 for its 60th Anniversary"

So I assume it's the same transfer?

Extras are listed as:

*New* Delena Kidd on Room at the Top
Extract from BEHP Audio interview with Sir John Woolf
Audio Commentary with Jo Botting
Audio Commentary with Neil Sinyard
Behind the Scenes stills Gallery
Trailer

So there's quite a difference with the BFI extras.

On BOTH releases (presumably :

Audio commentary by Neil Sinyard
Audio commentary by Dr. Josephine Botting
"Room at the Top" Image Gallery (4:45) - Presumably part of Behind the Scenes stills Gallery on Studio Canal release.
Jack Clayton Scrapbook Gallery (1:54) - Presumably part of Behind the Scenes stills Gallery on Studio Canal release.
Audience Response Card Gallery (1:00) - Presumably part of Behind the Scenes stills Gallery on Studio Canal release.
Original trailer (2:53)

Studio Canal has the following NOT on the BFI release:

1) Delena Kidd on Room at the Top
2) Extract from BEHP Audio interview with Sir John Woolf

BFI has the following NOT on the Studio Canal release:

1) "The Visit" 1959 short (34:43)
2) The West Riding in Archive Film (with Play All) (40:41)
- "Bradford Town Hall Square" 1886 short (1:51)
- "Bailey's Royal Buxton Punch and Judy Show in Halifax" 1901 short (2:41)
- "Tram Ride into Halifax" 1902 short (3:33)
- "Halifax Day by Day" 1910 short (2:07)
- "We of the West Riding" 1945 short (22:02)
- "This Town" 1969 short (8:23)
