USA Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes

Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes Blu-ray

Quote:
A shipping disaster in the 19th Century has stranded a man and woman in the wilds of Africa. The lady is pregnant, and gives birth to a son in their tree house. Soon after, a family of apes stumble across the house and in the ensuing panic, both parents are killed. A female ape takes the tiny boy as a replacement for her own dead infant, and raises him as her son. Twenty years later, Captaine Phillippe D'Arnot discovers the man who thinks he is an ape. Evidence in the tree house leads him to believe that he is the direct descendant of the Earl of Greystoke, and thus takes it upon himself to return the man to civilization.

I saw Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes a few times back in the day, and it's a solid good movie that adheres pretty well to the Edgar Rice Burroughs source material. The landscapes in the film will look great on Blu-ray.

I'm not sure if I'll upgrade this one, but I'm finding out that nostalgia for my 1980s youth is an insidious mistress when it comes to collecting Blu-rays.

Awesome. I was just considering buying the DVD from Wbshop.com 2 days ago. I've only seen the movie once when I was younger, but I thought it was great. I also just read the first Tarzan book in January so I've been wanting to see Greystoke again ever since. This will be a Day 1 purchase for sure.

I remember being slightly disappointed in this because while the trailer gives the impression that it's going to be a fairly close retelling of the book and it does get closer than any other film version by far, it still strays quite a bit from the original when it didn't have to and while there's lots to improve upon in Burroughs' books, they didn't necessarily make it better.

One bad thing they did was turn D'Arnot (Ian Holm) into a comic figure.

You also have to get past the illogical parts of the book that they did include, like the infant being able to teach himself how to read. Burroughs always proposed that genetics was the overriding consideration and he essentially tied class to genetics, which was interesting considering that he himself came from a relatively humble background.

The film was also slightly controversial in that Andie McDowell's voice was overdubbed with that of Glenn Close.

According to IMDB, the film was originally 3 hours, but cut down. I'd love to see a longer cut of the film in addition to the theatrical cut. It also sounds like there was a lot of dissension in its creation: Robert Towne taking his name off the film, etc.

In spite of the negatives, I would have liked to have seen a sequel to this. Once they got over the origin tale, this could have gotten more interesting. There's actually a lot of "Indiana Jones" aspects to some of the Tarzan tales, whether it's the fantasy aspects of "Jewels of Opar" or where Tarzan is helping the Allies during the war in the later books.

I saw this film in 70mm (blowup) at the old Beekman in NYC. I remember the sound being really terrific and the Beekman wasn't even all that great a theatre from a technical standpoint. Hopefully they were able to find and use the 6-track mag masters as a source for the BD release.

I also a 70mm blowup print - at the Uptown theater here in DC and I remember the music sounding fantastic in 6-track mag audio. I'd assume sine the DVD is 5.1, the bluray will hopefully be the same.

I've always wanted to see this but never got around to it. $20 is a somewhat pricey blind buy. Hopefully Amazon will have a pricing error like they did with The Hudsucker Proxy. Otherwise, I'll try to watch it before it comes out.

It's now available for preorder from the Warner Archive site as well.

http://shop.warnerarchive.com/produc...+1000399678.do

EDIT: Their site is currently listing a DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio track. I believe this is a first for a WAC blu-ray release as the others only had DTS-HA MA 2.0 audio.
