Default Why do I care about the format war?

I haven't invested in either format yet but I really hope Blu-ray wins. Sony had a superior product in the Beta/VHS war and I believe Blu-Ray IS a far superior product. Plus the sleazy tactics BUYING studio support makes me ill.
I'll ride the fence until after the holidays. I hope you guys win. I will probably be joining you soon.

yeah go buy one now! Go to Best Buy and buy a bluray player and hdtv and you'll get 3 years to pay it off with no interest!
If you have an hdtv then you are limiting yourself without blu-ray!

I know how you're feeling. But this time around things are a bit different. Follow your heart though.

This time around Sony has a huge following. Some people only buy Sony products because of the Sony name (neverminding certain better products at lower prices). Aside from porn, VHS won because it had more corporate support, such as Blu-Ray has now.

Besides that, every week various companies are going with the superior technology. The future will not support VHS, DVD or HD DVD. Go blu and feel safe in your decision. It is inevitable.

shouldn't the OP be warned about the almost-addictive quality of Blu Ray?

Once you buy and watch one, it becomes the hardest of habits that you'll never want to break!

Ok, how's this? If you go with hd dud you are going to the red sea, where things are muddy and murky. If you go with Blu, the water is crystal clear and breathtaking. Still undecided? Hell I'm old enough to remember when my aunt bought our family a Sony BetaMax for Christmas one year. I think it was something like $600 at the time.

You could always get a PS3 and then you'll also have a gaming console (if you're into that sort of thing only, of course). Then no matter what it's not a waste of money because the PS3 will always be a game machine (although if Blu-Ray lost, the PS3 would be very hard pressed to do well in the console war).

I think I am like you. I was neutral. I was not going to buy heavily into discs until the winner became crystal clear. Renting was going to my primary solution, but then that Paramount incident happen. I thought it was a shot below the belt. To abandon their blu-ray customers and under those conditions angered me. And to add fuel to the fire with some weak excuses. Bad, bad, bad.

I know you are already leaning blu-ray, so I'm preaching to the choir. It has some nice specs now and more to implement in the future. The picture and audio are outstanding. You won't regret making the move.

You invested in beta? Well, I invested a lot in laserdiscs. It was fun while it lasted.

Other than Sony being involved and the technology being better that is where the similarities to Beta end.

JVC is a contributor to the Blu-ray Disc Association. In the Beta/VHS war, they were VHS.

So, just about all of us here invested in VHS and DVD. Either do it right the first time or not at all. I litterally received my player a month ago. Less than a week later, the Universal Para-bomb was dropped.

I got over it, not regretting it. Now I am watching "Planet Earth" and it is awe inspiring. C'mon, name a movie you love. Someone here has it on blu-ray and will tell you all about it. 300, 5th Element, POTC 1&2, etc.

If by some odd act of God HD-DVD won, I would NOT give up the quality my blu-ray player affords me. I would live without, or buy a dual format player. We know that Sony learned their lesson from that Beta / VHS fiasco. "He who forgets history is destined to repeat it." That is what Toshiba is doing.
