Blu-ray Samurai

![]() ![]() I loved the director's Luz so had my fingers crossed for this. It was funny, a little bit unsettling, extremely well done and the cast was perfect. I was expecting total batshit crazy after Luz but it was more reserved and accessible maybe so hopefully it'll get a bigger audience. Mostly English but a few important bits in German (or maybe not that gave away a bit of the story) so subtitles needed if a 4K does pop up somewhere. https://hmv.com/store/film-tv/blu-ray/cuckoo https://www.rarewaves.com/products/5...cuckoo-blu-ray https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DDYJCQ3Q US Blu-ray https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=22458730 US Blu-ray News: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=35187 |

I know why they went with what they did though, as they're trying to appeal to a wider audience. It looks like it fits right in with your run-of-the-mill, last-teen-girl-standing, mid-budget, mainstream horror flick, whereas in actuality (going off Singer's previous film Luz), I'm assuming this will have something of a brooding arthouse sensibility to it, which the BD cover simply doesn't convey. In fact, when I first saw the BD I dismissed it out of hand completely as something entirely disposable. It wasn't until I found out that it was the latest film from someone I admired that I cottoned on. My brain had instinctively put it in to the same category of film as Becky, Totally Killer or Freaky, which have their place but don't really appeal to me. I could be wrong, but I do believe these kinds of things turn off the exact type of audience that is likely to appreciate the film and be more receptive towards what might be a more esoteric style, whilst attracting a larger cohort of those who really won't. It reminds me of the BD art they used for the UK edition of Valhalla Rising. Now, I've got a lot of time for 300, but I'm not sure if the average dudebro suckered in to watching Valhalla Rising based on the marketing department's deliberate ploy to appeal to the 300 audience would have been anything other than majorly disappointed with the cerebral slow-burn that they got. And again, the artwork they used will likely have put off many who would have gotten a lot out of it. |
