It's apparent that Netflix is more focused on jumping on the streaming boat than providing its customers with quality Blu-ray inventory.
(My 4-at-a-time "movies at home" list is empty, due to a queue full of unavailable Blu-rays.) Although it takes a long time to get new releases on Netflix, eventually those popular titles do become available. However, Netflix seems to be showing absolutely ZERO interest in building up a decent inventory of catalog titles new to Blu-ray. I love reading the reviews on Blu-ray.com and I'll often come across a movie that I haven't seen - or haven't seen in a long time - that I think is worth a look, but perhaps not worth a blind-buy. Of course, as it stands, brick & mortar rental stores are slowly dying, and those that are left appear to spend as little on Blu-ray as possible by providing only the newest releases on Blu-ray. Good luck finding a television series on Blu-ray, or any lower-profile film that was released more than 3 or 4 years ago. Which leaves online rental service, the leader of which is Netflix. Blah. Streaming movies is convenient, but if I REALLY want to see a movie, I want to see it presented well. Not with a highly compressed stereo audio stream instead of 5.1 HD audio, and not with video that - although technically may be "high definition" - can't hold a candle to the picture quality of Blu-ray. So - aside from Netflix, all I've come across is Quickflix. They seem to be a little more expensive (less movies at home at one time), but at a quick glance is looks like they're providing a nice selection of catalog films on Blu-ray. Anyone have any experience with Quickflix, or recommend another online company that provides the type of service Netflix SHOULD be providing? (It's especially irritating that Netflix charges you extra for Blu-ray rentals, yet they don't have the inventory to back it up, nor do they give a hoot about catalog titles new to the format.) Thoughts, anyone? |
