Default 399$ PS3 40GB with Spider-Man 3 this year?

Quote:

$400 40GB PS3 with Spidey 3 Blu-ray pack-in? Our mole tells all
By Ben Kuchera | Published: September 09, 2007 - 10:16PM CT

Our mole has a great track record: both the Xbox 360 HDMI story and the wired Xbox 360 Rock Band controllers have since been confirmed. Whoever our friendly inside source is, he's got some great contacts. Now he's ready to tell us what Sony's console pricing plans may soon look like. Here's how Sony's platform pricing will shape up by the holiday shopping season:

80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
PlayStation 2: $99.99

The 80GB price drop isn't that shocking, but a new $400 40GB system would be huge news. Would people be willing to part with 40GB to save $100? I think so, and having a $400 PlayStation 3 option would be a great weapon this holiday season. If they get to show off the Blu-ray capabilities of the system with Spider-Man 3 bundled? That's a nice package.

The $99.99 PlayStation 2 would ensure that the venerable system will continue to sell well. This is rumor for now, but when Sony makes some announcements at the Tokyo Game Show, I would not be shocked if these were among them. You heard it here first.

it's not a first time rumor...it may be very true . and 99$ PS2 = Sony win Xmas , also if it's and came with Spider-man 3 blu-ray true then bye bye HD-DUD thingy

Sony matching {or getting close to} 360 price for the holidays?

Oi Vey.

360 is going to get a whuppin laid on it with Blu-Ray coming down the pipe and the good games that they've got coming out before the end of the year, Halo 3 indeed.

i don't think there will ever be a 40gb ps3.
60gb are phase out due to hdd shortage as seagate going eol with their 60gb hdd line.
might as well say 20gb ps3 is making a comeback.

Either that or drop the Motor storm package and do a spidey package for 399.99, but that defeats the whole value of the 599.99....so who really knows?

I hope all this is true.

It would only have advantages for the PS3, if it also has a low-end model for a lower price.

I like that they'll promote a movie with it (thinking of the current and future PS3 owners who don't realize that it can play Blu-ray movies).

Possible, but Sony is smart enough not to confirm anything until and unless there's a Blu-ray player announced below $400 MSRP.

If you see no Blu-ray players at MSRP below $400, I sincerely doubt Sony will drop the price to $399.

well, they did that at the initial release with talladega nights. I wish they would have kept including a BD movie with the PS3...for the exact reason you stated!

Very interesting....a $400 Blu-ray player, that plays games, and is a DVR. Sounds like a deal to me. For all you guys wanting the inexpensive Blu-ray player this just might be it!!!!! To all you HD DVD trolls lurking about (and I know you are.) this is officially a nail in the coffin.

I know Sony INSISTS on marketing the PS3 as the "Swiss Army" system that does everything....and it DOES! Granted, it's awesome! With gaming, online, wifi, blu ray, PSP remote play, upcoming dvr capabilities, etc, etc, etc. It does everything I could ever hope for and does it all pretty darn well!

However I have this bad feeling that it's going to backfire. The PS3 needs to be first and foremost a gaming system. That's what got the Playstation brand to where it is and that still needs to be priority one with marketing the PS3. The problem is that even at 399.99, it's far too pricy in comparison to the Wii and the 360. Especially since you can get a 360 for a hundred dollars cheaper with, let's just face it guys, equal graphics quality up to this point.

I'd say right along with sticker price, marketing is really what is keeping the PS3 from achieving it's true breakthrough. 399.99 is a step in the right direction but until it reaches 299.99 and some real VISUAL evidence that PS3 games can do things that 360 games simply cannot, it's going to struggle.

If this is true, I would hope the 40gb version would not be like the striped down 20gb version. It should feature all the built in goodies that the 60/80gb PS3's have, just with the smaller HDD. That would make the PS3 a steal compaired to the Xbox 360 Pro and Elite. Also with the option to update the HDD to something larger.

In the UK it has a DVR function. It was announced a month and a bit ago. N. America will have to wait some time for this.

Very promising. I still love to use the thing as a basic computer through Linux. So fun on a big TV.
