Default Houses are GREEDY!

I swear that every time I get a nice chunk of change built up, my house knows it. A few months ago, I was all set to buy a new receiver and my water heater developed a pressure issue. It started leaking and also caused a leak in the plumbing inside the wall behind it. Receiver money gone. Now I have another little fun egg set aside, and I get home yesterday, and the AC is DEAD! I have a friend who does AC work on the way. He thinks it's just the capacitor. If so... most of my fun egg will survive. Wish me luck!

Just curious, how hot is it there now, sounds hot as heck, really hope it's just a little nothing.

Outside it's in the 90's with a heat index of almost 100. Inside the house it's 85, with the only electronics on being one entertainment center and every fan we could find (oh and this PC.) I'm dripping sweat, sitting in the dark, right in front of a fan. I hope it's a simple fix he can take care of tonight. Don't think I could take a whole weekend

It WAS just the capacitor! $75 for the part. My friend didn't want to charge labor.... but wrote the check and double the part price and handed it over before he could say otherwise. YAY! The house is cooling already.

Must be contagious. We just replaced our capacitor about a week ago. Only difference is it cost us around $200 . It definitely pays to know someone that does that kind of work.

Real estate is a huge ripoff. I've made money on it, and I've lost money on it....but I was never (not for one single second) happy. Then I quit caring about owning real estate, and rented. My blood pressure thanked me.

I currently live with my girlfriend, though, and her house is paid off completely. I stay home and write, and take care of the household stuff. She owns a hair/nails/tanning salon. Good times.

I'll never rent again. I like a mortgage where I know the minimum I have to pay will always be the same amount, and I can pay as much as I want, to pay it off as fast as I want vs. rent that is guarunteed to go up pretty much every single year with no improvement to the property. I like being able to put holes in my walls to run cables through if I want. I like being able to have whatever pets I want... without size & quantity restrictions or paying someone extra for the priviledge. I like that noone has the legal right to enter my home without my invitation (or a warrant .) I bought my house ten years ago for 67k. Before the market crashed it was valued at 150k. Even after the crash it's almost $120k... and that's real value, as a house on my street sold for that much a couple of months ago.

Yeah, but if I want to move tomorrow morning, I can without fear of one penny's worth of financial consequence for myself. Buyers usually have little or no freedom/say in the matter (unless they want to lose their ass financially), and I likes my freedom of movement, I does.

Just different strokes. I guess I should have said that I feel that real estate is a big ripoff.

And I haven't paid taxes in years, either....but that's another story for another time in another thread. But it's another good reason I don't/won't own property....I don't owe The Man jack, and I like it that way.

I've had A/C issues almost every other summer we've lived in this house (seven years now). It's due again next year. I'm seriously considering, if it does go out, saying F it and buying a new outdoor unit. But they're so damn expensive.
