Primarily to those who say they refuse to buy used discs. While out at stores the other day I noticed a title I kinda had interest in on sale for $5.99 at Best Buy. But this title has been out for over a year, and of course the BB had no slip cover.
Then later at the used store, I see a copy for $5.66 (to make it an even $6 with tax) with a mint slipcover, which made me think... If you refuse to buy used, what would you do if in a situation like this? I don't want to hear about "I would've bought when it came out and got my slip", but if you missed a title for whatever reason then had this happen, which would you go for? Assume the used disc looks brand new and possibly never played, mint slip with no price tags, even has the digital copy insert and the code is still live (99% of used discs I've bought that have the code insert have still been live, people round here don't do digital I guess!). Do you still spend an extra 60 cents or so for the new one and get no slip, or do you save 60 and get the used slipped one? I decided I didn't really want the title anyway and skipped both, but know I would've gone for the slip even it was slightly more. For slightly less, no freaking question! |

Refusing to buy used means refusing to buy used. I'm sure there are people who almost always buy New, or usually or mostly or half the time or whatever. And that's fine. I'm sure there are people with dozens, if not hundreds, of different priorities and reasonings, and maybe exceptions.
But some of us won't. Ever. Buying the New disc would be a very easy decision in the scenario you present. |

I just love movies. I couldn't give a rat's heinie for slipcovers or whether it's new or used.
I had a friend who had a wall full of DVDs. They were all in alphabetical order, and inside each case the discs were on the spindle with the text upright and square. I was at his house once, and he went to the bathroom. When he came out, I told him that while he was gone, I had taken out one DVD and put it out of alphabetical order. Then I took another and turned the discs upside down and put it back. You should have seen the look on his face. All evening, he kept begging me to tell him which ones I had disturbed, but I wouldn't say. As I was leaving, I admitted to him that I hadn't touched any of his disks. I just said I did. If I didn't admit that, I knew he would pull every disk off the shelf and start over again. OCD is a terrible thing. Last edited by bigshot; 03-01-2016 at 06:46 PM. |

If you wanted the slip and could verify the condition of the disc, I don't see why you wouldn't buy the used one. I typically only buy used if the title is OOP, but that's mainly because most online sellers tend to overrate the condition of used stuff.

If I passed on it for $5.99, it isn't a movie I would bother with even if it was used with a slipcover and $2-3 cheaper. I had Die Hard 5 in my hands a couple of weeks ago but couldn't bring myself to blind buy it for $7.99. My argument may also be moot because I have replaced my desire to optain slipcovers with custom covers.

I've bought OOP titles used many times as its the only way to secure a copy for myself. Also I'm willing to buy used if the price is good and the disc and art are mint. In the situation you are setting up I would probably buy the used copy if it had the slip and was in mint condition.

This really depends on what one's specific hangup with used media is. The scenario you've laid out only speaks to one type of person. Some people only buy new because they think used items are only for dirty peasants, and/or they fear a used copy may be missing something the new copy had. This type of person would likely be tempted by the slip. Other people don't buy used on principal. Their logic is, since you're not buying the BD new, none of the money you've spent is going to the creators of the film/TV show, thus buying used equals not supporting the film industry. This type of person will always buy new no matter how attractive the used copy is.
Me personally? I don't care, I buy used whenever I feel like it. I'd totally buy the cheaper slipcover copy. ![]() Last edited by Region_unlocked; 03-01-2016 at 08:04 PM. |

To me, the people who only buy new are frustrated philatelists. They seem more interested in the case, slipcover & assorted paraphernalia than the actual film. That is not a criticism, merely an observation. I myself, am guilty of trying too hard to avoid Australian releases because of the outrageously large rating logo that ruins the artwork but that is another story.
Being an avid film collector, I have purchased or traded for many "used" discs in my time. I don't understand, given the digital nature of the data, if the disc is clean and cared for, what possible difference it could make as to previous ownership? I can't count the amount of times I have had to return discs to Amazon US because they have slipped off the spindle and gotten scratched slipping around in the case. So much for new. |

I generally don't bother even looking at used stores or on ebay, as I feel I get pretty good deals on new (I'm pretty much a deal hunter, only buying when there is a sale).
I would have no problem used if I happened to find the "mint slipcover" or whatever. But I probably wouldn't be there in the first place. |

I haven't bought that many used blu-rays I guess mostly because stuff I want isn't usually that much cheaper used, if I wait for sales. I bought a fair share of used dvds back in the day though, and a gazillion used CDs (still do that). Don't care about cases and certainly not slipcovers, only condition of the disc.

"Dear Uncle Blockbuster, we really like you large movie collection, and how you have them in alphabetical order. At least how you used to 😄 !!! See if u can find the 20 movies that we moved around. Have a great night, love James and Julia" The funniest part is the little sh*ts only moved 15 movies and I spent well over another hour trying to find the other 5 that were not in order. |
