Default Speaker recomendation

Something better than hitb? I hear most people on here think you can do much better if you assemble it you'reself

I want to experience some great sound. I've never had a good speaker system. I mostly listen to music off my laptop...
I'm looking to spend around 600? that seems to be what onkyo is going for. But I could go a bit more than that if it's worth it.

Also I'm not sure If I will have the room for surround sound. If so could I just upgrade the front speakers?

I'm not looking for anything on sale as I won't be buying for at least a month. I read the stickies but I really don't know how to tell good speaker specs from bad speaker specs.

could I someone teach me how to fish here?

thanks a ton.
