Default MTV's Death Valley

While I haven't been able to see a lot of cool stuff at Comic-Con yet, due to constant debacles with lines, whether it be trying to pre-register for next year, or squatters sucking up all of the seats in Ballroom 20 (thank you Game of Thrones and True Blood fans for the non-memories on Thursday and Friday, respectively), I was pleasantly surprised by MTV's Death Valley (as opposed to needing to see more episodes of ABC's The River and BBC America's Bedlam), which starts airing in August.

Set in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, Death Valley chronicles the travails of a special unit of the LAPD known as the Undead Task Force (UTF) via Reality TV camera crews that ride along like on that old standby of the genre, Cops. It's a half-hour hybrid show that combines horror and comedic elements in the vein of films like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland. While there are zombies galore, with the outbreak curiously being self-contained to the Valley, the UTF also must contend with other creatures such as vampires and werewolves. Unasked, and therefore unanswered at the panel, was the question of whether all of the monsters were going to be makeup-based, as opposed to a creature shop cooking up "rubber monsters", or CG being used, which of course can lead to cheesy looking effects, so it remains to be seen if a Chupacabra would ever make an appearance on the show, for example.

They've got 12 episodes in the can, so they're just waiting to see how the audience will respond in order to determine if a second season can be greenlit. I, for one, am greatly looking forward to the launch of this new series.
