Default New Trend??

w/more and more big name 3D movies coming out....is the new trend going to be to package any "extras" on the 3d combo pack??

best example i have....last year, Prince of Persia came out w/a single disc and combo pack option.

the combo pack contained the majority of the extras.

is this going to be the new trend w/3D releases??

the regular blu-ray combo pack will contain the blu/dvd/digital copy and the 3D combo pack will include the disc w/extras.

if this is the case, how does everyone feel about it?? having to buy a 3D disc some may never use.

I have noticed the following trends with 3D BDs:

1) They cost no less than $25 online and in store.

2) They tend to have fewer extras.

3) Majority of content is either animated or shoddy 2D to 3D conversions.

4) Most don't come with slipcovers.

5) Retailers are not moving as many as they would like.

Hate to break it to you diehard 3D fans, but those are the trends right now.

I'd hate that. Being forced to buy a combo pack with a DVD and DC is different because those can come in handy when people travel, or if their kids or pets play frisbee the discs...3D Blu-rays, not so much...

Many people love them as collectibles.

They look better on the shelf. Also, the cover art of a slipcover is often different than the cover art in the actual case.

personally, i'm an extras junkie. i love to watch making of doc's.

i just hate the idea of buying a 3d combo pack and never using the 3d disc.....i don't plan to upgrade @ any point......or selling it and having the case advertise 3d and not have a 3d disc in the case.

As a fan of 3D, I would be worried if any of this were true...

I'm hoping Thor breaks the trend with only the 3D packs having the extras. The regular combo gets the BD, DVD, and DC. The 3D version seems to only add the 3D disc.

That's the thing. 3D movies continue to perform much better at the theater than they do for home use. The reasons are what I listed above.

Most likely because the cost to experience 3D at home is extremely high at this point, and the need to wear glasses has always made the idea more of a niche item.

to me, they shouldn't be forcing consumers into buying a 3d combo pack when they want the extras to try and "boost" the 3d market.

if the tv's and equipment isn't selling well, they should concentrate on that market, not the home video market b/c that will never be big enough to sustain 3d or push 3d into the mainstream.

Oh, the 3DTVs are selling because the major CEMs are putting the 3D feature in virtually all of their newer models since last year. The problem is less only a couple percent of those bought are actually being used for 3D. It also doesn't help that one needs expensive glasses, a new 3D receiver, and new 3D BD player to utilize the full benefits of this rushed out the door technology. The CEMs and studios should have waited a few more years until home 3D was perfected, but all they were looking at was falling profit margins to the decline of DVD's revenue.

Don't give them any ideas! I'm afraid they'll start putting extras on the 3D discs themselves, and nothing on the normal BDs!

that's what i'm afraid of!!!

really, the 1st BIG summer movie that is being released along these lines is going to be Thor where both the 3D and 2D versions come out the same day.

Isn't Pirates 4 doing that? The extras disc is only being included in the 3D set, if I recall the specs.

This of course sucks. But it wouldn't be too shocking to me if this were the trend. After all, they did the same with DVD. Many movies on Blu-Ray now have exclusive extras that the DVD versions don't have, and not because the DVD version couldn't have had the extras-- it's because they want you to adopt the newer format.

I really hope enough people complain to the studios and this doesn't become the trend.

What consisits of "most"? I only have four 3DBD's and they all come with slips. Seems like every 3DBD I've see comes with a slip.
Also as an "extras" enthusiast I can't say I agree with you on point #2 either.
Point #1 - Agreed, but that's the nature of the business

I have only seen one with a slipcover in store.

There have been several 3D releases that have had the movie only unlike their 2D counterpart. The studios didn't fix this until they started releasing the combos.

1. I've got most my 3D movies for less than $25

2. (not sure on this one, I'll be sure to check this out though)

3. True

4. Every 3D I own has a slip cover

5. I'd have to ask you to cite your source on that one.

I'm not a diehard 3D fan however I do have a 3D TV. I bought the Tron 5 disc 3D set before I had a 3D TV only because it was about $10 cheaper than buying both Blu's (Tron: Legacy and Tron), aslo the cover art was way better I've noticed that the 3D versions of a movie are only a few bucks more than the 2D. I don't pay to see 3D movies in theaters unless they were filmed in 3D, but if I like the movie I'll grab the 3D blu for a few extra bucks.

Also, I dunno why they include the 3D and 2D blus in sets? If you put a 3D blu in a regular blu-player or using a 2D TV ... you see the 2D version of the movie. I think they could just put the 3D version and drop the 2D version, they way it keeps the cost down as your dropping a disc out of the set, and everybody can view the movie. Also if someone upgrades to 3D ... they already have the content instead of rebuying movies in 3D!! Just my thoughts...
