Default Boomless SVS sub

Hi, I'm a newbie at this HT stuff so please bare with me. I just got a new sub woofer and I'm really disappointed in the lack of bass it is producing. Room size is 14x20 with 8 feet ceilings and opens up to a kitchen.

I watched my usual movies Transformers,Hulk and listen to a few bass songs. And was sort of shocked to feel almost nothing from my sub-woofer. I really don't know what is wrong here.

My Set up:

KEF 3005 Satellite speakers 5.1
SVS PB12-Plus DSP
Onkyo TX-NR3007

Receivers Settings are as follow after running Onkyo Audyssey setup.

Speaker Config:
Front: 120 Hz
Center: 90 Hz
Surround: 120Hz
Sub: 1ch (don't know what that is)
LPF of LPE: 120 Hz

Level Calibration:

Left: -4.0 db
Center: -6.5 db
Right: -7.0db
Surround right: -7.0db
Surround left:-6.0 db
Subwoofer 1: -4 db

Loudness plus- off

My Sub-woofer settings are as follow:

Menu Volume:-20db
Menu Lowpass: Disabled
Menu Phase degree: 0 degree
Menu Room Gain Comp:disabled
Menu Subwoofer tune : 20 Hz
Menu P-EQ: Disabled

To be honest half the stuff up there I have no clue, what they mean. I just plugged the sub in, and ran the auto calibration. Subwoofer is probably not in the best ideal location at the moment. But, ill be getting a longer cable soon and will have more room to move it around later.

Thanks

did you have another subwoofer before the SVS??? was it in the same position ???

you would be surprised how much room positioning will have for output. a few feet or even a few inches will make a HUGE difference.

Yes, I had another sub. Was the one that came with the KEF satellites. My room arrangement is different though. Actually, it is a complete mirror image now. Had to make space for the PB12-Plus. I just want to make sure my settings or whatever else it maybe is not the culprit. I did also walk and listened at other spots of room to make sure it just was not my listening position.

You could probably turn it up to about -12 or -15

But placement is always key

I'm not sure, but I think he means this:

"My Sub-woofer settings are as follow:

Menu Volume:-20db"

I don't have one, but that sub is supposed to be really, really nice!

I know that this is quite a bit of reading, but if you check out the first few posts in these threads, I can pretty much guarantee you that you will have a better understanding of how all of this really works, and you will be able to get much more out of your setup. It has helped me immensely:

For that sub I have the volume on the sub at -12 and on my avr I have the sub set at 0.Also on the sub eq I have 40 Hz set to -2db(room specific). Everything else is the same as yours besides my phase but that’s more system specific. However I use a bass eq (sms-1) and I turn a bunch of stuff down so that changes the levels a lot. Audyssey will get you close but I would go in and change all your speakers to the same crossover points for your f/l/c/sl/sr because they are all basically the same size speakers and drivers. I would try 100 Hz to start for your speakers. when you crossover a speaker all the info below that goes to the sub ONTOP of what is already being sent to the sub from the lfe channel. Imo subs sound there best when they are only handling the lfe content channel. When you start adding more source info from other channels to the sub the sub starts getting an overfull of bass material (but that’s another huge debate). Placement is always the overriding factor for subs. A cheap $150 sub can easily outperform a $2000 sub if the cheap one is placed right, and the better one is in a bad spot.

So I should adjust the sub amp volume from -20db to -12db then. And turn my Onkyo sub level calibration to 0. Here is what I have so far after running Audyssey again and did a few adjustments.

Receivers Settings are as follow after running Onkyo Audyssey setup.

Speaker Config:
Front: 120 Hz (Changed to 80HZ)
Center: 90 Hz (Changed to 80HZ)
Surround: 120Hz
Sub: 1ch (don't know what that is)
LPF of LPE: 120 Hz

Level Calibration:

Left: -4.0 db (now at -5.0db)
Center: -6.5 db (now at -3.0db Increased this by 3.0 db after Audyssey)
Right: -7.0db (now at -6.5db)
Surround right: -7.0db (now at -5.5db)
Surround left:-6.0 db (now at -10.0)
Subwoofer 1: -4 db (now at +2.5db I increased this by 3.5 db after Audyssey)

Loudness plus- off

My Sub-woofer settings are as follow:

Menu Volume:-20db (you want me to change this to -12 db?? )
Menu Lowpass: Disabled
Menu Phase degree: 0 degree
Menu Room Gain Comp:disabled
Menu Subwoofer tune : 20 Hz
Menu P-EQ: Disabled

ok, if your sub is not in the same position as you last one.... get an SPL meter. put the sub in your seating position then crawl around on your hands and knees till you find the sweet spot in your room. you'd be surprised how much your room placement is key in getting good spl response

Was your kef sub any good, i have never heard one myself?, but have never heard an SVS either.

Only reason i ask is many people i know going from "fake" to "real" bass have unusual expectations in what they think they should hear. If you had a sub that did not go low but hit a few of those mid levels really hard you may have to become accustomed to accurate lows. I know quite a few people that would swear logitech makes the finest sub on the market because it vibrates one note extremely loud Either way i agree with placement, and the "crawl" test always works great.

Sometimes when going from a poor level sub(Low cost) to a higher level sub(high to mid cost) you run into a situation where the tuning for the sub was different. It might seem odd but some people when first adapting to a higher level sub ending up thinking there is less bass when its actually the opposite just tuned differently. I had a similar issue, my first sub was tuned about the mid 30's which gave it a ton of punch but almost no infra-sonic rumble. When I moved to my HSU I was like, "What happened to my bass?" then I gave it a chance to burn in and it came back in triplet. Mine happened to be burn in, sometimes its just as simple as letting yourself adjust to the new kind of bass.

I know its not a helpful post just my own experience.
