Japan Space Battleship Yamato live-action film (2010)

For those of you not familiar with this Japanese classic 宇宙戦艦ヤマト, it is called Star Blazers in North America. And for the first time ever, there is a live action version to be released in Japanese theaters nationwide. Cast includes Takuya Kimura (木村 拓哉) as Susumu Kodai, Mamoru's younger brother and Space Battleship Yamato's Tactical Unit Leader.

Plot: The year is 2199, and the Earth has been under radioactive siege from the Gamilas Empire for five years. Earth's population has moved underground to escape the bombardment, but the contamination is slowly penetrating to reach them. The crew of the Space Battleship Yamato sets out on a journey to the planet Iscandar to acquire a device that can heal the ravaged Earth before it is too late.

By the way, the theme song is performed by Steven Tyler titled "Love Lives", and this is also Tyler's first solo project I believe.

Use to watch this a lot way back in 1975-76 when it played here on French TV. Movie look's pretty good I will see it for sure.

Agreed!

Anyone know if the theatrical version in the US will be dubbed or have subtitles?

I loved this show, have all the seasons and movies on DVD.

I hope they don't change the Gamilons too much. The description says they have an undetermined form.

Desslok is one of the great villains of all time, I'd hate to see that character lost.

There was talk of making a US version (american actors) about a year or so ago. Hopefully someone is planning it. Will watch for the blu-ray of this one for now.

How do the DVD's look up-converted on your Sony WEGA 51" HDTV?

Thumbs up

I wish I could tell you!!

[Show spoiler] Torgon has the 51in TV, not me. I haven't watched them in a while but I wouldn't say they are great quality but it was an old show and the dvd's came out quite a while ago. I don't know if they'll ever be upgraded but I wouldn't count on it. They are also quite expensive

I think I paid $30 a volume at Suncoast when they were first released.

Cheapest I've found is $239.99 for all three seasons, I'm just wondering how they might look upconverted on my Kuro. I have them on VHS but I'd hate to upgrade to DVD if the picture quality was horrible.

The movie doesn't even have a US distributor yet

I have my doubts it will play theatrically in the US at more than a handful of theaters no matter who gets it, and thankfully is unlikely to be dubbed on such a release if at all. They're holding Deslar and the other Gamilas possibly even for opening day. Yes I know Yamato has a big cult following here, but no one remembers the franchise here outside that niche, and it's very much based around a symbol of Japanese nationalism, and therefore won't resonate much with the newbies who are unable to put themselves into that context.

This is coming from someone whose mother made him pajamas like the uniform when he was 5 So believe me when I say this- I want to see this so badly I can taste it. But I also want to be realistic about what kind of return it's looking at

I think we'll at least see the Blu Ray get an english dub next year. The web site has an english dub and Steven Tyler is doing part of the sound track.
