LEGEND OF THE MOUNTAIN (1979)
A film by King Hu

"A visual ravishment." - Manohla Dargis, NEW YORK TIMES

Special Features:
  • Booklet essay by writer and programmer Grady Hendrix
  • Interview with film critic Tony Rayns
  • Video essay by film critic Travis Crawford
  • Trailer

Quote:
"Hu, a master of the wuxia swordplay subgenre of martial arts cinema, is perhaps best known for Come Drink with Me, Dragon Gate Inn, and A Touch of Zen. For his late-period Legend of the Mountain, Hu turned instead to a supernatural fable set during the 11th-century Sung Dynasty, drawing upon Pu Songling’s classic 18th-century collection Stories from a Chinese Studio and filming independently on location in the South Korean countryside. A scholar-errant, tasked with translating and safeguarding a Buddhist sutra involving the afterlife, loses his grasp of space and time as he wanders through a strange, haunting mountain landscape. Along the way, he encounters temptress ghosts and Taoist priests, ancient abandoned fortresses and inns, and a delirium of color, sound, and silence." – Museum of Modern Art

Excellent, I was planning on importing the region B Masters of Cinema release but maybe I’ll get this one instead.

DVDbeaver has a review up for the UK release from MoC. The Kino release should be pretty much identical, save for encoding differences. T

Any idea on the difference between the two editions on Amazon? One just dropped to $13.19.

I was wondering the same thing. I went ahead and preordered it anyway to lock in the price.

I want to pre-order it, but if there is a massive difference in the two (a la Suspiria 2-disc vs. single) then I'd rather hold off.

Oh well. Easy enough to cancel an Amazon order these days so I might just go ahead and order it at $13. That is almost way too cheap to pass up.

Well, looks like that $13 edition was the DVD. My procrastination paid off! ...for once.

Amazon just matched the $13.25 price. I loved A Touch of Zen, so this is an easy blind-buy at that price.

Honestly have not heard of this one, but watching the trailer and seeing the preorder on Amazon I just jumped on it. Seems like a film right up my alley

Really looking forward to this. Hopefully Kino won't disappoint with the transfer. Really been on the fence between Kino and MoC here.

The only other question I have is will Criterion release Dragon Inn. Really nice to see all these films getting 4k restorations and Blu releases.
