Default Upgrade from Onkyo TX-SR605?

A few years back I bought an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver. I want to upgrade and from what Im reading I see that the TX-SR608 is a good choice. Can someone tell me if it's worth the upgrade or if these two are too similar?

It's not a real upgrade. How much are you looking to spend?

I disagree. I think going from the 605 to 608 would be a significant upgrade with the THX certification and more HDMI inputs. If you are sticking with the same speakers and are happy with your current 605, then I say go for it

Now if you have difficult to drive speakers or are planning to delve into more power hungry speaks at some point, you may want to take a look at the 708 or above...

That does not make any sense to me. If he is happy with the 605 then go for the 608?

If he's happy then stick with what you have. Upgrading every one or two years with the same entry level receiver because of one or two changes in that model is going to be expensive.

If you can afford it, and want to upgrade receiver so soon, atleast move up in model numbers. I understand this is not always the case, because some new models may be worth it, I just don't think this is one of them.

To the OP, I guess the question to you is, why do you what to upgrade?

I know you stated $500, but you can get an 808 for $599.99... Now that's an upgrade!

I'd have to disagree with this point. THX is overrated, not to mention all links in the chain would need to meet THX specification for any added benefit.

So the 608 having THX is close to meaningless. I would not base any purchase because of this.

I'm sorry...

Or get the Onkyo RC-180 for $399.99.

More power and also pre-outs.

This is also better then getting an 608

It depends on how much you want to spend.

If under $500.00, then get the Onkyo RC-180

For over the $500.00, Then Yes, get the Onkyo 808.

If you don't mind refurbs, then this is the place to buy them

What were your reasons for wanting to upgrade?

I tell you what happened to me, back when I bought the Onkyo 605. When I brought it home, I loved it, but It seem like I was missing something.

Alot of the sound fields I wanted were in the Onkyo 805. I really was interested in the Ultra2.

I ended up ordering the 805 and compared it while I had the 605 still with me. I have been in love with my Onkyo 805 ever since.

The 708 is not a bad idea, much better then getting the 608. If you are planning to add an amp, then the 708 is fine.

Now I don't know what to do with my TX-SR605 :\

It's a pain to sell it, since it's super heavy to ship.

The 708 is basically a 608 with pre-outs. It has the same power supply so you will be getting the same power. The 605 actually outputs a little more than these receivers although the newer ones should have better sound quality. The 808 would be a much better upgrade. I have to ask though, what are your requirements for the future? If you don't have any plans for 3D then there are plenty of very good receivers from last year that are worth a look at.

The prices have bounced up and down on a lot of them, but with some patience you can get a $1200-$2000 receiver from last year for under $800 that will be a true upgrade. There have been some awesome deals on various Marantz and Denon models that have popped up over the last few months. You may even see some deals start popping up on some of this year's models around February since the new ones will start rolling out.

If you don't want to wait there are still some terrific deals on a few current receivers right now should you want the latest features. Already mentioned is the Onkyo 808 for around $600. The 1008 is also available for $800 which would be a substantial upgrade over what you have now. Like I said though, if you don't need 3D some of last year's models are definitely worth looking at.

The Denon AVR-3310ci for example was like $530 shipped a couple of weeks ago, but unfortunately the price has gone back up. There were crazy deals on the Marantz SR7002 and SR8002 recently as well. A little patience can get you an awesome deal, but for the quick fix I think the Onkyo 1008 is the best deal out there right now with a refurb 1007 being a close second.

Thanks for the info. I plan on getting 3D soon, that was another reason after all these suggestions I decided to just go with the 808.

Keep it. I have a 602 that I bought years ago, then I decided to make a lateral move and bought an equivalent spec Denon. I realized I wasted money making that move so my next purchase was a true up grade...the 1007.

Always good to have a backup and you never know when you would like to have a another set up. My 602 sat in a closet for a few years then one day I decided I wanted music in the garage/patio...a couple of rock speakers later...bam, I was putting it to use. Now I have my Denon set up for stereo/vid game in the living room and the 602 is back on the shelf.

my OSD menu does not display on screen, most of the time, then sometimes it does? Sometimes I get random video drops, so I turn everything off then back on. I dunno maybe time for something new. Overall I have been happy with the reciever over the last several years. Now just trying to figure what direction to go. I recently got some eD speakers so I wonder what a new receiver would do for them. If I would hear any benefit?
