Default BD on the Wii - a "what if" theory

Could Sony somehow work with Nintendo and have its Wii (a new version) play BD? Or is that something that will never happen? Keep in mind that I'm sleep deprived and my brain cells aren't all here....

No. The Wii plays 480P...they would have to gut the laser and put a new one in. It would abandon what the Wii's strengths are now, like how it is adaptable into any household with a TV.

Sony and Nintendo have lots of bad blood.

But I thank Nintendos mistake and giving me the Playstation brand.

I have heard that Nintendo was in the development stage or a bluray WII. Its possible, but not sure if it will happen or happen anytime soon.

This possibility has been discused before and it does not make sense. Nintendo has been sucessful with the Wii due to its affordable price. What will Nintendo gain from adding a Blu-ray player, and pricing the system out of their target range? Don't think so.

No, it's not possible. Nintendo manufactured the Wii to be affordable and profitable, and adding a BD drive would make that impossible for them at this time. The technology is too new.

Secondly, the hardware in there probably isn't powerful enough to decode HD video.

I had no idea that this was even a topic before. But I was thinking more of having like two versions, regular and one with Blu so folk will have the choice....like they say "if you build it, they will come"......

Yeah I wouldn't hold your breath. For all the reasons listed above and a few more. Wii won;t have a Blu-ray player for the same reason that the X-box 360 doesn't have an HD-DUD player. Neither developer wants to stick their neck out right now with a format war. Sony to a risk by including a Blu-ray play in their next-gen system. Let's face it the PS3 could have been $299 without the Blu player and game developers would be all over it. Plus Nintendo is in direct competition with Sony why would they help them out by increasing their Blu-ray numbers? I would have been happy if Wii had a freakin SD-DVD drive let alone a Blu-ray drive.

Who remembers the Atari 2600? I vividly remember the commercial of the guy who wanted a sytem with the most games, and could upgrade to a home computer, etc. Sitting in front of this guy was a fully loaded Atari 2600 with home computer adaptor. Only that home computer was a prop. It was announced and never released.

No one is going to turn a Wii into a blu-ray player. It may barely handle being a DVD player.

If I want a boat, I'll buy a boat. I'm not going to buy a boat adaptor for my car.

No. You're more likely to see a blu-ray 360 drive than a Wii drive. And nintendo is notorious for not using standard media such as cd's and dvd's. And it would be a dumb move giving the #1 video game system (wii) something that is exclusive to your system (PS3 blu ray).

Besides the fact that Sony and Nintendo are competitors.....the Wii is really marketed as the entry-level brand. I don't see the point , sorry.

As it is, it doesn't play DVDs, and it's suspected that it would require more than a firmware update to resolve that issue...

Really I think the best thing is just not to think too much about it. THere was an intentional design decision in leaving out DVD playback...

Not the WII. It's not powerfull enough. We must believe at some point Nintendo will have a console with a blu-ray drive but probably not until after the format war is over. For that matter by the time they have a blu-ray drive blu-ray players will probably be like $50.00 or something.
