Hopefully this means At Close Range and State of Grace won't be too far behind. Those are much better films imo than Falcon and the Snowman which is damaged by the charisma challenged Timothy Hutton.

I'm mainly psyched for it because of the soundtrack. I almost hoped TT would get it just so there'd be an isolated score, but hey, I'll take what I can get, I'm surprised it's getting released at all.

At Close Range and State of Grace are two of my most anticipated releases. I already have the Australian editions of both State of Grace and Falcon and the Snowman, but prodigal consumer that I am, I'll undoubtedly double-dip.

An At Close Range Blu release would probably stop time in my household. SO love that movie. Gotta disagree about Hutton..he is just right for this role IMO. I really miss this Sean Penn. Effortlessly occupied a character and could perform circles around his contemporaries. Nowadays when I see him in something all I see is Sean Penn. Somewhere along the way he jumped the shark. Great news about this release.

Placed an order for a copy but I'm feeling like this won't be one of my better blind buys based on that review. For starters, the review states the film feels "unfinished", with suddenly dropped characters and subplots (if I'm understanding it correctly). Trailer makes it look like a terrific action/suspense flick but as we all know trailers can be deceiving. Then there's the transfer. Not one of MGM's better HD masters. For $17 I guess it won't be too much of a loss if turns out bad.

Here we go again. Just like Image Entertainment's accidentally MONO Blu-ray release of the Broadway "Into the Woods," this Kino Blu-ray of "The Falcon and the Snowman"--recorded in Dolby Stereo in 1985--has a MONO soundtrack. This is definitely another screw-up: check out the 2-minute preview in Vudu: Vudu is streaming this film in HDX (1080p) with a full, genuine stereo soundtrack, from the MGM lion's roar on. The Blu-ray's lion roars in thin mono, and so goes the rest of the film.
I'm pretty sure that the original Australia Blu-ray release, on Shout/MGM, is stereo (though lossy), as was the previous DVD. Certainly Vudu's streaming transfer is stereo. But Kino blew it. Why does this keep happening? This is the fourth case I know of where a Blu-ray release was accidentally mono when a good stereo soundtrack existed. |
