Paramount Sangaree 3D Blu-ray (1953) [Region A Locked] [Paravision Dreams]

It's not often that you have an opportunity to interview a living legend AND solve a mystery which has lingered in the technological history of motion pictures for more than half a century. Hillary Hess accomplishes both in her wonderfully detailed article, "An In-Depth Look at SANGAREE."

Miss Arlene Dahl shares her memories of the production and the origins of the Paravision camera rig (with its newly-discovered connection to a legendary comedian) are finally solved.

Noteworthy as the first 3-D production from Paramount; the first 3-D film in Technicolor; the first 3-D film based on a best-selling novel and the first 3-D film billed with an A-list cast, SANGAREE will be restored from original 35mm elements by the 3-D Film Archive and released on 3-D Blu-ray by Kino Lorber Studio Classics in 2018!

Contrary to popular belief, Golden Age 3-D was truly diverse!

Is "Sangaree" the "upcoming western" that's been discussed lately or are we talking 2 different things?

Hopefully, after the restoration is complete, the Technicolor will really pop.

In your article, you mention that "On February 20, Adolph Zukor filmed a special 3-D promo on the Sangaree set for exhibitor screenings." Will this be included on the blu-ray?

Either way, keep 'em coming, Bob. The 3-D Film Archive is on a roll.

A costume romance in 3-D! I believe that's another first for blu-ray. And Ms. Dahl makes an important point when she says 3-D heightens the intimacy of the romance (and the drama) of this kind of film. That's exactly what audiences want, but I don't think that idea has been explored anywhere near enough in 3-D cinema so far. It'll be fascinating to see how the Golden Age people approached it. And once again, I'm lovin' the range of genres the 3DFA is giving us!

Excellent points, MercurySeven.

The entire 3-D output from the Golden Age was about variety and diversity. The more that modern audiences are exposed to that wide range, the better.

Yes, Bob, indeed it was! And this one was my favorite! This ten-year-old loved the exotic story and Technicolor and Arlene Dahl and Fernando Lamas and just the whole thing!
Can't wait to get my hands on it!
Thanks again to you and all for your work in preserving this. For once I can crow about something from MY childhood!

Great archive list and history with some great photos and posters, thanks Bob!

Cool! This looks promising, especially knowing 3-D Film Archive chose it to restore, with a growing 3D library of strong 3D films. Great news for 3D fans.
