Default tv series on Blu-ray?

Hello,

I am no expert on HD but I have a pretty nice HDTV now so I am wondering if it is worth it to buy a BD player and start a blu-ray collection.

Mostly I buy TV series (some movies too but mostly TV) and I wanted to ask the experts how likely is it that older TV series will be released in HD on blu-ray? I am talking shows like Buffy or Seinfeld.

Will this ever happen, and if so how soon do you think it could happen? I know maybe even the experts here don't know for sure but if you could guess for me that would help.

Thanks!

hey, welcome to blu-ray.com

absolutely you should get a blu-ray player! you've been missing ot if you havn't

right now, there have been no older shows released on blu-ray, just recent stuff like Lost season 3, Nip/tuck 4, Smallville, etc.

However, the good news is Sony is supposedly working on remastering all seasons of Seinfeld for blu-ray. that is the only older series i have heard of. friends season 1 might come out too.

star trek season 1 is out on hd dvd, but that format is dead as of now.

I highly recommend Lost season 3

I don't see any older TV series going to Blu-ray, not at the moment anyways because they were all shot in Full-screen, but expect more TV series to get a Star Trek-like re-mastering in High Def in the near future.

dead or not you gotta be outa your mind to spend 180+ dollars on one season of startrek ..... i too have a huge tvdvd collection and cant wait to see some more on blu ..... i had just bought smallville on dvd like a week before i bought my bd player so im holding off on that one, weeds and lost are the only tvblu i own .... weeds looks great some episodes and good on others, but nothing spectacular.....lost on the other hand looks amazing. im hoping sooner or later we'll get battlestar and especially heroes

I dream of the day when a whole season of The Simpsons is on one BD. No more changing discs to continue. Mmmmm...now that's laziness

Currently Available:

Damages (Season 1)
Lost (Season 3)
Masters of Horror (Season 1, Volumes 1-4)
Nip/Tuck (Season 4)
Prison Break (Season 1)
Rescue Me (Season 3)
Smallville (Season 6)
Sopranos (Season 6 - Parts 1 & 2)
Weeds (Seasons 1 & 2)

Rumblings of 24, Stargate (SG1 & Atlantis), and Seinfeld have been posted on the internet, as well.

Fox announced years ago that they would release the following series:

The Simpsons
Family Guy
24
The X-Files
M*A*S*H

Found the link: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/08/04/fox_blu_ray/

But I wouldn't necessarily hold my breath. The films in that announcement haven't seen the light of day yet with the exception of the Die Hard movies.

I would expect X-Files and the Fight the Future Movie would be released in conjunction with the new X-Files Movie, though. I believe seasons 1-4 are in Full Frame, and 5-9 were filmed in HD (and broadcast in WS). Unfortunately (in my opinion), seasons 1-4 were the best. ::sigh::

24 was all widescreen, and Buffy's spin-off Angel was, too (assuming they were HD as well). So we'll probably be seeing those series that don't need massive remastering first (again, just an educated guess.)

I'll be picking up (when and IF available)

X-Files
Buffy
Angel
Heroes
Alias
Heroes &
Battlestar Galactica

And I may pick up Lost (if they announce and follow through with Seasons 1 & 2 in Blu).

Default wow

Wow great info, thanks for the help yall, some nice folks in this forum.

I see some shows in this post that I would love to own nice copies of, so I guess I will start shopping for a blu player. I will take some time to find a good deal on a nice player because it seems like it will take some time for all of these shows to be released.

Thanks again!

Even if they take forever to release LOST seasons 1 & 2 (Let's hope they release it soon) not buying LOST season 3 right now is a crime. The PQ and AQ are simply AMAZING!!!!

anyone who bought lost

what is "start season play" as opposed to "play all disc episodes"

is this a feature for like a 6-disc bluray player if they even have these?

Season Play saves where you are onthe disc, so you can just pick right back up even if you remove the disc from your player

well with the simpsons, fox usually release the simpsons in the uk january and august, and with season 11 not even being announced yet, one can only imagine that they could be working on a blu ray version to co-incide with the dvd release, or the delay may just be to do with the movie release.

i myself would love to see 24, shameless and curb your enthusiasm on blu ray

Yea 24 I think would be the biggest addition to Blu-ray simply because it would be the show to use the advantages of Blu-ray the most. However that aside I would love to see Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Simpsons, The X-Files, and Family Guy on Blu. They would all be immediate buys for me.

I guess some series are worth getting, but they'll be releasing really old stuff and I'm not sure it's a good idea to get them (who said "The little house in the Prairy" ?) so I'll only stick to movies myself, and keep my old DVD series (I only own "Married with Children" so it's gonna be a quick one )

For TV shows that are SD and older like say Babylon 5, Married with Children, beginning seasons of ER, etc. I would like that they would take advantage of the large storage of Blu-ray and just put a whole season on 1 disc.

Because most shows are not going to get remastered for BD. I find it hard to believe that Seinfeld is actually being remastered, but I guess its their hottest TV property, but I really wonder how much is a comedy show going to benefit from High-Def. I'd rather be able to buy the whole show, all 8 seasons in a case that is only a double wide case like the Die-Hard Blu-Ray boxset. Now that would be cool and save alot of space.

Video Business magazine has already reported that TV sales started to drop off a year and half ago and alot of it has been attributed to people saying they just don't have the space. So the studios went to Thin-Pak packaging. And I say with Blu-ray they can go one step further.

Babylon 5 was retransferred in HD (except FX shots) for the DVDs from the original film

Outside of a few random bargain bin releases, you will not see them stuffing entire seasons on 1 disc, pretty much ever. If they're charging you $39.95 a season, people are more likely to buy based on percieved value (more discs, worth more despite identical content). Maybe a special boxset pressing, but certainly not everyday product

I'm not sure I agree, I was just at Costco today and they have total show boxsets that is every season sold as one unit (X-Files, Friends, Seinfeld). So why would you think they would not hesitate to release a whole season on one disc. Less packaging means less cost for them in many ways- transportation and shipping, can put more shows on shelf at BM, etc.

And as I said they have already moved to Thin-Paks for TV seasons. And the green movement is pushing companies even further in this direction.
