History is looking to make entertainment out of the most famous family feud with a miniseries about The Hatfields and McCoys.

The cable network has tapped Oscar winner Kevin Costner to produce and star as "Devil" Anse Hatfield. The project, which will center on the bloody hostilities between two clans that escalated to the point of near war between two states, will air next year, the 150th anniversary of the country's most infamous family feud.

"The Hatfields & McCoys is a classic tale of American history. These are names that are widely recognized, yet few people know the real story that made them famous," said History president and general manager Nancy Dubuc in a statement.

Added Costner, "As an avid history fan, I am thrilled to join with Leslie Greif and History in this dramatic re-telling of a classic and timeless tale that is forever immersed in the folklore of our country.”

History miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys adds Golden Globe nominee Bill Paxton to its cast.

The actor, who is set to play Randall McCoy, will join Oscar winner Kevin Costner who was tapped in May to produce and star as "Devil" Anse Hatfield. Kevin Reynolds (Red Dawn, The Count of Monte Cristo, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) is attached to direct.

The project, which will center on the bloody hostilities between two clans that escalated to the point of near war between two states, will air next year, the 150th anniversary of the country's most infamous family feud.

It is part of the largely unscripted cable network's push to move into the potentially brand-enhancing miniseries space. Despite an early misfire with The Kennedys, which ultimately aired on the ReelzChannel, History is also readying efforts including The Bible, a mini from Mark Burnett.

History’s The Hatfields and McCoys family is expanding.

Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe and Mare Winningham have joined the miniseries starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton as the famed leaders of the feuding families.

The project follows the former friends and Civil War comrades who return home after the war to properties on opposite sides of the Tug River border in Kentucky and West Virginia to increasing tensions that bring the neighboring states to the bring of another war.

Paxton (Big Love) will play Randall McCoy with Costner (Dances With Wolves) set as “Devil” Anse Hatfield.

Berenger (Major League) will play Jim Vanse, Anse’s Uncle Jim, the warlord of the Hatfield family.

Boothe (Deadwood) will play Wall Hatafield, Anse’s level-headed older brother who was the local justice of the peace and judge.

Winningham (Mildred Pierce) will play Sally McCoy, Randall’s beleaguered wife who loses four sons, a daughter and her sanity in the feud.

In addition, Red Dawn helmer Kevin Reynolds has signed on to direct the miniseries, produced by Leslie Greif’s Thinkfactory Media.

History will air the project next year, on the 150th anniversary of the country’s most infamous feud.

I couldn't find another thread on this topic (sorry if it has already been done). Anyways, this is very exciting. It's amazing that Kevin Reynolds and Kevin Costner are working together again after they had a very public falling-out during the making of Waterworld. Reynolds is a very underrated director and this cast is excellent. Can't wait!
