Default Thinking of going for the Panny VT30 - thoughts?

I've been a happy owner of the Panny TH58PZ500U for 3 years. I'm looking at getting the 65" vt30 as soon as it drops to a good price.

I'm not too interested in 3D but I'd watch it if available. I want the other improvements like black level, lower power consumption and wifi. Of course 7 inches more of diag size is a plus The thinner screen is also very cool looking.

My big hesitation is that these thin screens can break easily.
What do you guys think, and am I being too concerned about a non-issue? It is extremely thin, and I want to have it hooked on the wall like my other TV. I feel that the screen could break easily because it's not as sturdy as my other screen.

Comments please.

The fact that the TV is too thin should be the least of your worries. In fact, there really isn't much wrong with the VT30 now that the fix for fluctuating brightness has been established.

I say go for the VT30 or even the D7000/8000. You can't go wrong with any.

I think the price will drop another $300 or 400 after Xmas on the 65vt30.

I would save my money if you're not into 3D...
There's no TV on the market that looks as good as the KURO was, so your upgrade should really be because you think your TV is too small or you need wi-fi (do you have a PS3 ?) or your electricity bill is going crazy.

Maybe it's just me, but 3 years seems to me like a short period of time to change a TV and I would maybe invest into another part of me home theatre. But again, this is very personnal !

A bigger screen is the only reason i would replace my bedroom 50" Kuro. I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on anything as my Kuro works like a dream.

Default Think I will hold off for a while ...

After reading up some more on this set, it seems the only concern was the fluctuating brightness issue. All the forums seem to say that it is fixed now.
Surprisingly nobody else seems concerned about the fragility of the screen. I should go look at one again at Best Buy. Could just be my imagination.

Although I've seen the price drop on these sets quite a bit, there is still the sales of Black Friday, Christmas season and pre-Super Bowl sales.

It's funny that it's this time of year when I usually start contemplating getting a new TV. In the past, I remember wishing I had waited a few more months.

That's what I'll do this time.

The Fluctuating Brightness issue is only fixed on September builds and newer. If your ST30/GT30/VT30 was built before September 2011 you will need to have a factory authorized repair shop swap the "A" board.

We had the factory do the pdp eeprom operating system flashed to the new version on all of our inventory and our store demo TVs.

The VT30 is a great TV.

I can offer you my experience with lifting and positioning this TV, and fragility was definitely not a concern. It was extremely solid and heavy.

Does the ST30 share the same problem or is this the GT and VT's? Curious, since I'm considering the ST or VT.

Hi,your concern of screen breakage is genuine.Thinner they are the easier to crack even if you press and clean the panel.or if you bump into it accidentally. Its simple physics in a large glass panel the center area is very venerable or prone to damage. And if you read the catalogue of bigger plasma panels it states that the panel should not be made to rest on sleeping position, they recommend that wall mount installation be made while the panel is kept upright or else their are chances of the panel cracking due to its own weight. And this also applies to while carrying the plasma tv !
And if you are not happy by the thin design you can buy the last years vt25 model if avaliable, and could also be cheap.

here is a link of one of our members complaining about panel blow out while watching a BD movie...

I've had my p65vt25 for 18 months and it's been the finest TV I've ever owned. ZERO problems, no burn in, several friends have bought similar models after watching here.

Thanks to all for your comments.

My VT30 was delivered today and I will begin running the break-in colors cd.

All I can say is even off it is very awesome looking and the screen is unbelievably thin.

I actually put mine on the extra SD card for my digital camera. I just popped it into the SD slot and started up the Viesa menu.

I can't really watch my TV for a few days while this is running, but I can also say that the Panasonic menus are beautiful and very user-friendly. On my previous plasma they were kind of bare-bones.

I can't wait to watch it! It's been running for 1 day -- 3 to go!

So you guys pop in a DVD w/bars and colors and let it run for 4 days straight? Is that all really necessary even with the newer plasmas?

Then after that, one calibrates the TV? I have the Disney WOW blu ray, would that be a good one to use? Just wanna make sure I'm prepared and do everything right when I do get my panny! Thanks for the input!

When I broke mine in, I just picked about 70-80 blu's I own which have an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 that I hadn't watched in a while and I really felt like watching, and just spent a few weeks watching nothing but them (If I wanted to watch anything else I would just watch it on 1 of my other hdtv's). Most of them I watched during the 1st 3 weeks of my 6 week holiday off of work (I go back to work next week) while I was waiting for my fiancee to start her 3 week Christmas leave. Then after watching them all I calibrated my d8000 using the Spears & Munsil blu-ray calibration disc.
