There's more than one meaning in particular for breaking the fourth wall in films, but I'm primarily talking about incidents where the character in a film looks directly at the camera to seemingly be looking directly at you, the audience member. He/she could be just looking at you or may engage in a dialogue with you. Mel Brook's has done this many times in his films (Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Spaceballs). Other examples:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Johnnie Depp in the police convention thing) Ferris Bueller's Day Off Amelie Fight Club It's been done many times in films. It's one of my favorite little things in film. I love it when it's done right and done well. Fear and Loathing was one of my favorite examples of this. |

The Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movies when he talks to the audience.
Also in Dr. Giggles, at the end just before he dies, he looks at the camera and asks, "Is there a Doctor in the house?" I always laugh out loud at that and have to replay it several times. |
