I Need A Shooter Game

I have not played any video games for a very long time and need a shooter for PS3. I was holding out for Rage but have heard so-so reviews so I am passing on it. My favorite shooting games ever are Doom (from way back computer days) and Rainbow Six: Vegas. I understand these are two very different games but I just need something similar to one or both of these games. So I ask, what is the best shooter out today, first or third person does not matter?

Since you have been waiting for a long time it shouldn't be that hard to wait until the 25th and pickup Battlefield 3. You can currently check out the beta for free download on PSN

What you want to play now is Uncharted and Battlefield Beta or pick up COD MW2/Battlefield 2 to play till Battlefield and Mw3 comes out easily will be 2 of the best and hottest shooters out.

If you havent played DEAD SPACE, start with that game. You will love it. Plus since it came out 5 years ago, its cheap. And still has pretty good graphics. Plus its creepy and has some great sounds. Play this game at night with surround sound and lights off. You will enjoy.

As ryandubbz said, you can't go wrong with Dead Space (or 2, for that matter). Here's some worth a look...

Bio Shock 1 or 2
Uncharted 1 or 2 (or 3 next month.....if you wanna play 3's online component for free till 11/1/11, hit up Subway and get a large soda. Each cup has a code to download the full mp game. )
Resistance 1, 2 or 3
Killzone 2 or 3
COD: MW2 or Black-Ops (or MW 3 next month)
Battlefield: BC 2 (or Battlefield 3 later this month)
Resident Evil 5
Warhawk (online only game, or Starhawk which is coming out soon)

Good suggestions. I would suggest checking out the Playstation Store and see what demos are available for download. If I remember right, a lot of the titles listed above have demos.

Doom is the archetypical run-and-gun shooter. R6V is a cover-based tactical shooter.

What you failed to mention is whether you prefer to play single player or online multiplayer.

As you can already tell from the responses, there's a big cluster of games that fall between these two extremes, but here's my take on FPS games, speaking from the viewpoint of someone who doesn't do a lot of FPS gaming:

For run-and-gun play (Doom-style), you don't get much more robust than the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. Solid 60fps frame rates keep the action crisp, and there's tons of people playing online.

For tactical cover-based combat, you're probably better served by something like SOCOM 4, which has "somewhat" similar mechanics to Rainbow Six Vegas.

If online multiplayer isn't your thing, however, throw both of those suggestions out the window and perhaps try something else off the wall like Borderlands, Bioshock, or Uncharted.

Very solid point. I do prefer online gameplay. However, there are those days where all I want to is play a campaign. Looking at these responses, it is starting to look like I will have to purchase more than one game.
