Samsung is up first with their blu-ray player, but I was wondering if all blu-ray players will be about the same or certain players will include extra features not found anywhere else. This could be the case with Sony's blu-ray player.

rumor was that the first few (or the cheaper few) players won't support 1080p, but now the samsung has it, and it wont result in too great cost-saving for others to exclude it too, while it'd certainly negatively affect sales if they did.
so i expect everyone to have this from now on. internet connectivity for downloading extra contents and such might be the extra that's only available in the later, highend models, though its kinda ignored for the time being and is little talked of. samsung definitely doesn't have it, and i thought sony doesnt plan it too, but now im not sure at all seeing how sony delayed their launch to august. i expect atleast the pioneer elite to have it for sure - considering its price and late launch. it won't be all that important feature though - you can download extras and trailers just fine on your pc once they work out the internet authentication system though, it might be possible for networked players to stream videos over the network to computers or other networked media-center devices, be remotely controlled from PCs, maybe even serve as a PC BD drive for data discs - the possibilities are really cool. its hard to imagine any other kind of features that could be so differentiating... support for the various recordable discs might differ between players, especially discs with more layers. playback of divx and wmv and other computer files, image collections and such are all up to the manufacturers. once recorders start comming out, they will probably differ much more. |
