Clint Eastwood's second film as director finds the celebrated action star returning to his familiar Old West stomping grounds and his internationally acclaimed role of "The Man With No Name." This time, The Stranger (Eastwood) mysteriously appears out of the heat waves of the desert and rides into the lawless, sin-ridden town of Lago. After making a name for himself with a string of blazing gun battles, The Stranger is hired by the townspeople to provide protection from three ruthless gunmen just out of jail. The Stranger quickly proceeds to paint the entire town bright red, rename it "Hell," and supply divine retribution in the fiery, pulse-pounding climax of this acclaimed western shoot-em-up.

Day 1

Didn't care much for High Plains Drifter. As far as I'm concerned, I already own all of the best Clint Eastwood westerns on BD. The Man With No Name trilogy, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and Unforgiven.

Slap Shot never looked too good on DVD, and with Universal behind the bd my expectations are not too high. But it's pre-ordered regardless.

The ones you listed are the best, and are on a different level, but High Plains Drifter deserves another look. It was an early directorial effort by Clint Eastwood, and really the first time he returned to the "anti-hero" role that he created in The Man with No Name trilogy. Once again, a mysterious stranger giving a bunch of bad townspeople the spanking they deserve.

I agree. For me his more "average" westerns were JOE KIDD and HANG 'EM HIGH. I liked both of them, but love HPD!
