Hi Folks,
I have two titles I've bought from overseas. In both cases, the first disc I received was faulty; Amazon replaced it, and the second is also faulty. I'm trying to make sense of this, so I'd really be grateful for any thoughts or feedback. Please bear with me and this long post; I'm trying to give precise details. I'm hoping someone can suggest a solution other than throwing up my hands and giving up on these titles. The first disc was "The Dark Knight", the steelbook release from Amazon Canada. The second, "Whisky Galore!", the Ealing Studios Classics release from Amazon UK. 1) With both discs, I've tried playing the first copy I received on my hardware Blu-ray player, and also on the Blu-ray drive in my PC. In all cases, the drive made a grinding noise several times, then gave up seeking for data on the disc, and wouldn't play. In my PC, Windows Explorer could not recognise the disc as valid, nor display the folders or files on the disc. 2) In each case, I contacted Amazon (Ca. and UK) and was sent replacements. The replacement discs do exactly the same thing. 3) To test whether it was a hardware issue, I took all four faulty discs, plus "Batman Begins" (bought at the same time in the same steelbook edition from Amazon Canada) and "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (in the same Ealing series from Amazon UK), to my local computer shop. They were kind enough to let me try the discs on Blu-ray drives in a PC; the suspected faulty ones failed, and the others worked fine, exactly as they did on my machines. Across the road to JB Hi-Fi, where they let me try the discs in a couple of other Blu-ray players, and I got precisely the same result on all counts. 4) It's the discs. Has to be. (Doesn't it?!) 5) Both Amazons have declined to replace the titles again -- which I kinda understand, but is also frustrating. More frustrating is the fact that they decline to even entertain the idea that there may be a faulty batch -- Amazon isn't set up that way. They've simply refunded my money and called it quits. Again, I understand, but it's not an ideal outcome. So ... what am I missing? It's unlikely (isn't it?) that I could have received two faulty discs of the same title, twice, but maybe it's possible. I'm a bit haunted by the concern that it's a hardware player issue, but I think I've disproved it. Can anyone think of any mistakes in my approach, or ways to resolve this other than just giving up? I'd really be grateful for any suggestions. |
